All-Campus Mentoring Day and Academic Fair, Wed. May 15

  • Wednesday May 15 has Mentoring Day activities scheduled from 1:30-4pm, and Academic Fair is from 4-6pm.
  • Please look over the Mentoring Day Schedule. There are a number of panels that are of direct interest to PSAM students, particularly the graduate school in sciences panels, the panel on interviewing, the alumni panel, the contracts & internship panels, to identify a few. Graduating senior might also consider taking advantage of the Individual Academic Statement Support session. A reminder that I am available and eager to work with all of you on your Academic Statement, and graduating students in particular on your final Academic Statement, during open lab time on Wednesdays from 10:30am-1pm or by appointment.
  • Students who aren’t graduating this spring should make sure to connect at the Academic Fair with faculty teaching programs or potentially sponsoring your contracts for summer and next year.

Final Exams Review and Learning Goals

  • A reminder about the Exam Review and Learning Goals documents available in the CSS Folder,in the x Exam Review and Learning Goals folder.
  • Only 1 person has contributed to one of the documents so far. Those contributions were very good, and I made only minor suggestions for revision.
  • I encourage you to take advantage of this review and learning opportunity.

Phase and Group Velocity

Dear ElectroMagneticians! Several students conveyed to me interest in and confusion about phase velocity and group velocity. I found a set of lecture notes on phase & group velocity that I thought provided more useful details than the discussion in Griffiths 9.4 (these notes were originally available at http://www.colorado.edu/physics/EducationIssues/baily/, but that link is now broken). The notes link to a nice series of visualizations that begin here, which I will show in class.
