Week 28 Schedule, Reading, and Problem Sets

Subject/Reading Assignment Notes
CM: 13.1-13.6

CM PS#17: 13.5, 13.10, 13.12, 13.21, 13.26

  • For problems 13.5, 13.10, 13.21, and 13.26, can you use T + U for the Hamiltonian H? Why or why not?
  • Problem 13.12 might look familiar to you. Where have you seen it? Why can’t we use H = T + U in this case? Of course the whole point of the problem is to show this mathematically, but you should make sure you understand why H can’t just be T + U in this case.
EM: 12.3 (just 12.3.1-12.3.2)

EM PS#17: 12.44, 12.46, 12.47, 12.48, 12.66, 12.68

  • For 12.44(b), do just the first two sentences, stopping at “Finally, write E…”
  • For 12.48(c), review/look up Doppler shift for light.
  • For for 12.66, you may find it convenient to choose a coordinate system so that E points in the z direction and B is in the yz plane, such that E = (0, 0, E) and B = (0, B cos φ, B sin φ).
