CM: 9.6-9.8, 9.10; Frames of Reference CM PS#14: 9.17, 9.19 & 9.21 & 9.24, 9.22, 9.25, 9.26, 9.29
  • For Problem 9.17, start by drawing a free body diagram in the rotating frame; in that frame, in the plane of the loop, there are three forces: gravity, normal, and centrifugal.
  • See long note for Problems 9.19, 9.21, and 9.24.
  • For Problem 9.25, start by drawing a free body diagram in the rotating frame; in that frame, there are three forces: gravity, normal, and Coriolis.
  • Problem 9.26 gives you practice with the method of successive approximations from Section 9.8.
  • For Problem 9.29, no need to draw the sketches in part (c), but do address the question in the last sentence.
