Online hours, Wed. Feb. 13, 8:30-10:30am

For those of you who have internet access, I will be available at this Google Hangout from 8:30-10:30am Wed. Feb. 13. If I’m not on-screen or not actively paying attention, please say my name to get my attention.

I highly encourage you to check in during this time.

There’s plenty of work for you to be doing, either solo (QM Quiz Q4 or CM Quixam C3, both due Thursday 9:30 unless you contact me in advance to discuss an extension) but also collectively (though we will have to re-schedule our Instrument Seminar for this week, you can be doing some prep using the materials available via this post; on Thursday in class, we’ll continue with QM Townsend Ch. 4 and EM Griffiths 3.3 and 3.4; there are some EM curated materials and QM curated materials for you to go over and contribute to).

EM Curated Materials for Week 16

In the EM CSS folder, I’ve created a Week 16 EM Curated Materials google doc that gives links and some commentary to video lectures that have previously been linked to, along with a protocol for asking questions.

I’ve also included the start of some examples I had planned for us to discuss during class on Mon. Feb. 11 Tue. Feb. 12 this week, with some prompts to get you going.

Please use these to prepare for class on Thursday February 14 so that you can have as much time in workshop mode as possible.

(I hope to produce something similar for this week’s EM, but a good place to start are with the video lectures for Griffiths 3.3 and particularly 3.4 that have been previously linked to).

Online hours, Tue. Feb. 12, 3 – 5pm

For those of you who have internet access, I will be available at this Google Hangout from 3 – 5pm this afternoon Tue. Feb. 12. If I’m not on-screen or not actively paying attention, you may have to call my name to get my attention. Please stop in with any questions you have.

I think that there is a 10 person limit for video call participants in Google Hangouts. It’s unlikely that we would get to that limit, but I think you can still participate via the chat/message, so let us know if you are there but can’t get to the video call.

Whether, Weather, Tue. Feb. 12

  • Campus remains closed on Tue. Feb. 12.
  • Thanks to those of you who wrote to me to let me know how you are doing. I’ve heard from 2/3 of you, and am relieved that you are managing. If you are in touch with someone who doesn’t have email access, would you please email me on their behalf?
  • I’ve posted CM Qu¡xam! C3, which is now an at-home exam. See this post for details.
  • I previously posted QM Quiz Q4.
  • I will post some resources for QM, but the QM video lectures linked at this post will be central to that, so please watch those lectures as your internet capabilities will allow and take lecture notes.
  • Similarly, I will post some resources for EM, but the EM video lectures available via this post for Griffiths 3.3 and 3.4 will be key, so please also watch those lectures as you can and take lecture notes.

Quixam C3 (at-home)

CM: Qu¡xam! C3 (at-home)

  • due to continued campus closure caused by weather, Quixam C3 is now an at-home exam.
  • Please make sure to have ready your personally prepared 8.5inch by 11inch note sheet prior to downloading this Qu¡xam. In addition to your note sheet, you may also use the inside covers of Taylor.
  • Take this quixam under similar conditions as you would an in-class version: use allowed resources and limit yourself to 60 consecutive minutes.
  • Of course you may use your computer (or equivalent device) to view this exam.
  • Many of you don’t have access to a printer where you are staying. You may work on separate sheets of paper, but I will ask that when you do have access to a printer, you print out the first page and complete it to submit as the first page of your quixam.
  • The designated due time is 9am Thu. Jan. 14. If your personal weather-related circumstances will make it hard for you to meet that due time, I will consider case-by-case extensions, so please do ask. If campus continues to be closed, check back for updates.

Week 16 Instrument Seminar

As mentioned in this post, I’ve found electronic versions of the manuals related to this week’s Instrument Seminar. These cannot replace the richness of the Instrument Files, but will at least allow for minimally adequate preparation for Wednesday’s Instrument Seminar.

G: Microwave Interference

H: Physical (Fourier) Optics

I: Superconductivity & Magnetic Susceptibility

Whither, Weather? Mon. Feb. 11

If you are able, please email me directly to let me know how you are doing. I know lots of areas in Olympia are still without power. If you are in touch with someone (say via text or other means) who can’t email me because they don’t have power or internet, please email me on their behalf.

As you likely know, campus remains closed on Mon. Feb. 11. It’s unclear when classes will resume, so we’ll continue to adjust for each day as we learn more.

For now, here’s what we will do:

  • QM Quiz 4 will become available online by 9:30am Mon. Feb. 11 as it normally would. As our in-class workshop on the at-home first draft is not until Thu. Feb. 14 and the revised version not due until Tue. Feb. 19, this seems reasonable for now.
  • We’ll hope to take CM Qu¡xam C3 (originally scheduled for the morning of Mon. Feb. 11) on Tue. Feb. 12 at 1pm (during regularly scheduled CM lecture/discussion time). We’ll move the Taylor Chapter 5 material we would have covered at that time to the following week, so there won’t be a CM PS this week. If we continued to be closed on Tuesday, we’ll take Quixam C3 as an at-home quixam, details TBA.
  • We will not have EM lecture/discussion on the afternoon of Mon. Feb. 11. I will try to assemble materials that cover the material we would have discussed during Monday’s EM class and create a curated collection covering: more on separation of variables in spherical coordinates; separation of variables in cylindrical coordinates assuming no z-dependence; and multipole expansion (the new material this week from Griffiths 3.4). We will take all of the afternoon of Thu. Feb. 14 from 12:30 – 3:30 for EM, starting with lecture/discussion on questions you have with the curated materials, and trying to leave as much time as possible for workshop on this week’s EM PS #6.
  • I will similarly try to make some materials for this week’s Instrument Seminars available. I won’t be able to reproduce the richness of the Instrument Files, but I hope to be able to at least post some of the manuals.

I hope you are safe. Please let me know how you are doing, if you are able to respond to this post/message. I will be happy to see you soon.
