QM Final Exam!

Here is the Quantum Mechanics Final Exam!

Notes/Clarifications/Corrections (updated 1:30pm 5/24/19)

  • Remembers to limit your time on the exam to 6 hours total. Those need not be 6 consecutive hours. Exams are due to my office Lab 2 3255 by 5pm Fri. May 24.
  • I made a mistake numbering the questions. There are no problems numbered 15 and 17 on the exam.
  • Please do not interpret the page space available to answer a question as some indication of how much space it might take you to answer.
  • Problem 11 should note that N is a constant, and the reference to A in that problem should be to N.
  • Problem 2 would be more correct if it noted that each beam was determined to have z-component of angular momentum as given (and not just angular momentum).
  • In Problem 7, A should be Sqrt[2]. If you have already done part a) using A = 1, no need to re-do (even though it is not a difficult fix). No, it was correct as given.
  • Let’s make Problem 7g) a bonus, just like 8d). Two approaches work well (the two I did) but I should have cued you better about the calculus challenge or invited you to use technology; a third approach doesn’t work because of some subtle issues.
  • Planck’s constant h = 6.626 x 10-34 J·s; h-bar = h/(2*pi); h•c = 1240 eV•nm.
  • Cancel Problem 18c); in fact this transition is allowed. I should have asked about a different transition.

More QM Exam info

  • Here is a preliminary version of the information that will be provided on the QM Exam. Please check it over to make sure it covers what we discussed in class on Tuesday and especially check for typos. If you have thought of anything else that fits in this general category of information, please let me know, and if appropriate, I will try to add it.
  • Note that you also can use the inside covers of Griffiths and Taylor. Those are available in the Cave for you to pick up before the exam is available, if you didn’t pick them up on Tuesday. You should keep them for use on the CM and EM Exams.
  • In addition to the information that will be provided on the QM Exam and the inside covers of Griffiths and Taylor, you are also able to use a personally prepared 8.5 inch by 11 inch note sheet (both sides) that you have prepared prior to starting the QM Exam.
  • The QM Exam will be available at 9am on Thursday May 23. If you are planning to take the exam in person in the Cave on Thursday, please try to let me know in advance so I can have copies on hand. If you decide to take the exam in person and haven’t emailed in advance, that is just fine – there will be a very slight delay as I print an exam copy for you. QM Exams are due to my office Lab 2 3255 (slide under the door) by 5pm Friday May 24.

Cumulative Final Exams information

QM Cumulative Final Exam Details: The QM Exam will be an at-home exam. Standard at-home protocols apply: you will be allowed only a previously prepared 8.5inch x 11inch note sheet (both sides) and are not allowed to consult with any person in any way about the exam (other than the faculty) from the time the Exam is made available until the time it is due. You will be firmly limited to 6 hours to complete the Exam. Though these 6 hours need not be used in one continuous block, you are required to track your time carefully to limit yourself to 6 hours total. The Exam will be made available online at 9am Thu. May 23 and will be due to the faculty’s office Lab 2 3255 by 5pm Fri. May 24.

CM and EM Cumulative Final Exams Details: Students may choose to take the CM and EM Exams either in class or as at-home exams (following the at-home protocols given above under QM Cumulative Final Exam Details).

  • If taken in class, the exam will be administered starting at 9am, and collected by 3:30pm on the scheduled exam day and will follow standard in-class exam protocols; lunch will be provided by the faculty.
  • For those taking at-home, the CM Exam will be available online at 9am Thu. May 30 and due by 5pm Fri. May 31 to the faculty’s office; the EM Exam will be available online at 3pm Mon. June 3 and due by 9am Wed. June 5 directly to the faculty in the Cave.
  • Please let faculty know in advance which option you will be taking, by 8:30am on the scheduled exam day.

Reminder: Academic Statement due date(s)

  • Students planning to register for summer or fall courses or programs need to submit their Annual Academic Statement draft in order to register. You all were given a chance to update your Academic Statement in fall quarter; most of you shared a draft with faculty as part of your conference ticket for fall quarter conferences. However, you might not yet have hit the Turn In button. Please go ahead and Turn In your Academic Statement right away so you are able to register for summer/fall; you can always update it over the next few weeks if you choose.
  • Those of you who are planning to graduate in a few weeks (congratulations!) should be working to transform your previous Academic Statement(s) into a Final Academic Statement. I remain available during open lab time on Wednesdays from 10:30am – 1pm in the Cave or by appointment to work with your on your Final Academic Statement. Final Academic Statements are due Fri. June 14 (Graduation Day!).
  • We will have an Academic Planning & Statement Workshop for all students on Thu. May 16 during the afternoon workshop to be re-scheduled, and there is an (optional) workshop scheduled for Tue. May 28 in the afternoon particularly intended for graduating seniors.
