Recast | Reporting your equity-focused professional development — annual deadline is 10/15

Dear colleagues,
As many of us look forward to deepening our learning through summer institutes, I wanted to remind you all about reporting your professional development around equity and inclusion. Every year faculty participate in equity-focused institutes, but a relatively small percentage of attendees report what they have learned through their participation. The new language on the form is designed to encourage you to go beyond listening to a podcast or reading an article, and to ask yourself how your professional development work will materially affect your teaching.
Please submit your report for 2020-21 by October 15: https://www.evergreen.edu/equity/equity-inclusion-faculty-professional-development-participation-form.
You may be aware that the state has passed a new law “Requiring diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism training and assessments at institutions of higher education.” Our amazing colleagues in IESS were invited to help shape this legislation because of Evergreen’s longstanding commitment to social justice. This 2017 MOU articulates our shared goal of providing “education that is culturally competent, culturally relevant and [which] acknowledges the negative effects of bias.”
IESS will continue to partner with the Learning and Teaching Commons to provide DEI and anti-racism training options through our summer institutes; they are also developing a college-wide training curriculum. A key part of the legislation includes accountability and assessment, so please take time to complete this form. Some of the most meaningful change happens when you set your own goals and targets and ask yourself honest questions about whether you have met them. Many of you will be attending the Equity Action Plan institute on August 11 that will give all of us further guidance about what good assessment looks like, and I look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth
