John Withey has a new co-authored research article, “A novel model to accurately predict continental-scale timing of forest green-up,” published in the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation. The model uses ‘growing degree days,’ an easily calculated temperature-based measure, to predict ‘peak onset of greenness’ in forests in eastern North America (i.e. new vegetation growth), which is a key ecological factor useful in phenological studies. John collaborated with faculty and other scientists, all part of the Phenological Mismatch research project, from Georgetown, Duke, and Michigan State Universities, as well as Canada’s Ontario Forest Research Institute. This research is supported by NSF #2033263, “Causes, consequences, and cross-scale linkages of environment-driven phenological mismatch across three trophic levels.”
