RECAST | Amending Spring Startup: Crucial Details and Homework

Dear Faculty Colleagues –

Thank you for all the amazing work you have done to retool your spring offerings. Students continue to register, and there is a growing sense of confidence about the upcoming quarter. We have some amendments to our March 19 email concerning spring startup.

Please note that we have extended the deadline for submission of spring quarter alternate instruction plans and syllabi to April 10.

As President Bridges noted in his email of March 25, we are moving to remote offerings for all of spring quarter. Also, Governor Inslee has instituted a “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order which is keeping Washingtonians at home until at least April 8. There are indications this order may persist past that date.

Prior to March 25, we were planning for exceptions to remote learning in spring. Those have now been curtailed:

  • No in-person experiential learning, outdoors or otherwise, will be permitted until the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order is lifted. When conditions permit, we will send further guidance, including an application and approval process. Students may participate in individual experiential learning activities when they can be done remotely and safely.
  • On-campus distribution of supplies for academic offerings will not be permitted until the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order is lifted. (The only exception is the centralized distribution of computers to students.) The Bookstore is able to ship items they sell to students who order them. If you have a student fee for student supplies there may be some support for collecting and shipping those items to students. Contact Area Managers and the Academic Budget office if you have questions. After the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order is lifted we will have stations set up in the Library Lobby for the distribution of handouts that are sent to the Copy Center.
  • Faculty-student research, in the form of Undergraduate Research offerings or ILCs, were previously granted an exception by application. Such in-person research will not be permitted until the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order is lifted. We will provide further guidance at that time.
  • We are in talks with the Organic Farm staff about safety protocols and essential services it is providing, in accordance with the Governor’s orders. We are also reviewing internships and individual learning under the same constraints.

The college is drafting protocols for physical distancing and supply distribution, with health and safety as our top priorities.
