Greetings all:

Winter is almost behind us. The Indian Plum is blooming, and even a few early trilliums are showing their bright faces. Spring is on its way!

Huge thanks to all of you who participated in our recent Mentoring Day and Preview Day. These are great opportunities for information sharing, questions and support for new and existing students. We appreciate those of you who helped out!

UPCOMING EVENTS AND DEADLINES

Willi Unsoeld Speaker. Please attend the Tim Wise lecture at 11:00 on Wednesday, February 26, in Purce Hall, Lecture Hall 1.

SURF projects. Thanks to all of you who submitted SURF projects for our students this summer. What a pleasure to read such a diverse set of offerings—you are all doing some exciting work! The applications are now live on the website (insert). Please encourage students to apply. The deadline is Friday, March 13, 2020. The application is available here: https://www.evergreen.edu/academicgrants/surf/application

Academic Fair will be held this coming Wednesday, March 4, from 4:00-6:00 pm in the CRC gym.    

Summer Institutes. The Learning and Teaching Commons, in partnership with the Dean of Faculty Hiring and Development, is seeking your proposals for summer institutes.  Submit your creatively practical learning and teaching adventures for Summer Institutes on or before Monday, March 9. State of the College Address: Please consider attending the State of the College Address on Monday, March 2 at 3:30pm in Purce Hall, Lecture Hall 1. Following these remarks, there will be opportunity for informal discussion and light refreshments in the Purce Hall rotunda.

Individual Learning Contract and Internship Deadline: Please remember that Friday of Week 10 (March 13, 2020), is the deadline for faculty approval of spring quarter ILCs and internships.

  • In our reviews we look for: (1) the quantity and quality of college-level work; (2) clear objectives and activities; (3) any conflicts of interest; (4) clearances and signatures.
  • Students cannot exceed 48 credits in either category of independent work, and if students write an ILC or INT early in their studies we may advise them that ILCs are primarily meant for advanced independent work.
  • Please encourage students to pay attention to this deadline. The number of late applications has become quite staggering; let’s please tighten this up if possible. (Part of the reason we set the deadline in the previous quarter was to avoid last-minute and poorly conceived applications. Aiming to support the spirit of this policy is still very relevant.)
  •  Any ILC or INT submitted by the student after March 13 will require a request to waive the deadline. This form automatically populates in the ILC system in my.evergreen.edu. Students should not use the outdated paper form.  

END OF QUARTER REMINDERS

Self-Evaluations by Students

  • Students are required to write a self-evaluation for each program they take, and this self-evaluation should be “turned in” through my.evergreen.edu. 
  • Students are not obliged to post self-evaluations to their transcript.

Faculty Evaluations by Students

  • Students have a right to submit feedback privately, visible to faculty only after evaluations and credits have been posted. 
  • Please note: a practice in the past was for faculty to ask students to bring their faculty eval to conferences and read it out loud; this is no longer a common practice.

Awarding Incompletes. Evergreen’s current policy for offering incompletes for up to four quarters puts us in tension with federal policies and processes for returning financial aid funds. As we look to make recommendations for changing our current policy and processes, we ask that you consider only providing students, to whom you know you will be awarding some credit, with a thirty-day extension. This would not only remove any conflict with meeting federal policies and processes, but also will not drag student incompletes out.  Particularly important is whether the student earns any type of credit. If you will be awarding no credit, this must be posted by the college’s evaluation due date, which is within two weeks of the end of the term. We will be in touch with you in the weeks ahead about recommendations for shifting these practices and policy. For now, please consider no more than 30 days for incompletes, and please document the credits that have been earned in the online record system at the end of the program.
