Dear staff and faculty,

Please consider joining this online workshop, Tailoring Access to Facilitate Belonging, with Dr. Leticia Nieto.

Title: Tailoring Access to Facilitate Belonging

Date: 11/12

Time: 1-3pm

Disability justice and access go beyond compliance to center the experience of people who live with disabilities, particularly persons with intersecting social memberships that are marginalized.

The goal of this session facilitated by Dr. Leticia Nieto is to explore moments of high effectiveness in removing barriers and improving access and conditions for belonging. This will be a highly interactive session, please plan to have cameras on and to join via computer rather than phone. We will utilize the core principles of disability justice, developed by the queer disabled people of color collective Sins Invalid, to practice noticing and replicating what works well.

  • Intersectionality: Recognizing that ableism is deeply connected to other systems of oppression like racism, sexism, and classism.
  • Collective Access: Acknowledging that everyone’s access needs vary and that communities are responsible for creating new, creative ways of being together.
  • Leadership of the Most Impacted: Centering the voices and expertise of those who are most affected by ableism to guide the movement.
  • Interdependence: Moving away from the idea of “independence” as the ultimate goal and embracing a model of mutual support and care.
  • Sustainability: Pacing ourselves to be in the struggle for the long term, valuing our bodies and lived experience as a guide.

In community,

Cholee Gladney
Associate Dean of Equity and Belonging
