Equity Symposium

April 17, 2024 – April 18, 2024 all-day
The Evergreen State College
Equity Symposium @ The Evergreen State College

The theme of the 6th annual 2024 Equity Symposium is “Building Skillful Coalition.”

This event brings our community together with speakers, performances, workshops, and social events focused on equity, learning, unity, and belonging.

In a culture marked by polarization, we can empower our community with the skills to challenge the systems of supremacy that keep us apart. The Symposium’s keynote speaker is renowned human rights activist Loretta J. Ross. In her groundbreaking work on building coalition through compassionate dialogue, her aim is to transform our response to injustice, offering a way to overcome differences by using empathy and respect to guide difficult conversations. By fostering skillful coalition-building, we create conditions to learn, engage, share our unique gifts and strengths, and collaborate towards a more just society.

Loretta J. Ross will be on campus closing out the symposium Thursday, April 18. Loretta is an activist, public intellectual, scholar, the 2022 recipient of the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” award and an Associate Professor at Smith College. She has a passion for innovating creative imagining about global human rights and social justice issues and started her career in activism and social change in the 1970s.

In her work Calling In the Calling Out Culture, she transforms how people can overcome political differences to use empathy and respect to guide difficult conversations. In 2023, Loretta was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
