Hello colleagues,

Evergreen’s pre-college Upward Bound summer programs will be starting soon!  Through diligent planning in consultation with Evergreen partners, Upward Bound staff have designed this year’s summer programs to be a blend of in-person and remote.  These interdisciplinary hybrid learning institutes will serve over 130 students from our Shelton, Clover Park, and Tacoma Upward Bound programs.  UB students will participate with their peer learning communities in a variety of activities, including service-learning projects, cultural activities, residential study groups, visits to college campuses in the area, field studies, and internships.  Each program’s activities are designed around a particular theme:

  • UB Clover Park’s theme is “Storytelling: Beauty Through Perseverance”  and students will investigate their world and themselves through humanities and botany.”
  • UB Tacoma’s theme is “Around the World in 30 Days” and students will focus on studying the vastness of our world and the cultural richness of our region.
  • UB Shelton’s theme is “Our dreams will conquer our nightmares. | Nuestros sueños conquistaran nuestras pesadillas.  Students will consider how dreams lead to goals and goals lead to our idea of success.

If you happen to be on the Olympia or Tacoma campus this summer, please give our UB students and staff a warm welcome.  UB directors, Pavielle Dawson, Jaynina Smith-Prince, and Riva Villa and their staff have worked incredibly hard to continue to provide impactful programs in service of the Upward Bound mission- to support low-income high school students who will be first in their families to obtain a college degree.

Special thanks to Scott Morgan and the COVID planning team, Tony Alfonso and the IT team, Evergreen faculty and alums teaching in the UB programs, facilities staff on the Olympia campus, and Marcia Tate Arunga and Evergreen Tacoma staff and faculty for helping to plan and coordinate this year’s UB summer programs.

Please look out for an email with more information about how you can participate in the end of summer UB celebrations and programming which will be held in late July/early August.

In partnership and community,

Cholee
