Executive Summary
The defeat of Initiative 522 Washington Mandatory Labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods Measure was caused by an incredible difference of campaign contributions, and of course the vote. We clearly see that less than 50% of the registered voters of Washington State either didn’t know about this legislation, or simply didn’t care. If the initiative had been passed, it would have come with a penalty of $1,000 dollars, per day, per violation of this initiative. It would have gone into effect on July 1st, 2015. We can, however, conclude that with as much support as the GMO labeling campaign has obtained, this debate will continue into the foreseeable future. Particularly with such products as GE salmon on the way and the many other ways in which scientists are trying to change the worlds agricultural and food industries.
