February
12, 2021 Dear Staff and Faculty, As renowned tribal artists bring a bright refreshed Thunderbird to life again at the Longhouse, I write to tell you that Evergreen’s Vice President of Indigenous Arts, Education and Tribal Relations Tina Kuckkahn-Miller will take on a new leadership role at NDN Collective, a national Indigenous organization empowering Indigenous communities through philanthropy. Tina will begin her new position as director of grantmaking there on March 1. I’m happy to announce she will nevertheless remain connected to us and part of our community. Tina will retain a part-time advisory role in the Longhouse for up to a year to help us evaluate her current position and how best to fill it. Our shared goal is to make the transition to new leadership as smooth as possible, ensuring the work Tina has led over the last 25 years continues and thrives. Tina’s remarkable tenure at Evergreen began in 1996 when she became the founding director of the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center. Her key initiatives include the expansion of the Longhouse in 2009, the development of the unique Indigenous Arts Campus from 2012 to 2019, initiation of the Toi Sgwigwialt international Indigenous artist exchange program with the government of New Zealand, the establishment of an endowed scholarship for Tribal Governance concentration students in our MPA program, and so many other accomplishments over these decades. Tina’s vision, wisdom and creative drive have inspired all of us who know her. As she engages with a new set of opportunities and challenges in her cherished field of work, we will honor Tina’s accomplishments and legacy at Evergreen. Please join us for a virtual celebration on Friday, February 26th at 3:30 p.m. The event will be an opportunity to share fond memories and good words as we celebrate Tina’s new opportunity and Laura VerMeulen’s appointment as acting managing director of the Longhouse. To register, please contact Amber De Villers at pearsona@evergreen.edu. If you can’t attend, please share messages with Tina at kuckkaht@evergreen.edu and Laura at vermeull@evergreen.edu. Please stay safe, George George S. Bridges President The Evergreen State College |
