Faculty Note | Andrew Buchman | 2021-2022

Andrew (Drew) Buchman contributed a chapter on the genesis and reception of Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company” to the new anthology “Sondheim in Our Time and His” from Oxford University Press edited by W. Anthony Sheppard. In “Sexual Identity in ‘Company,’ 1969-2019,” Drew examined changing definitions of sexual identity from the 1960s to the present by tracing the history of key scenes and characters. For example, the show’s star Bobby (or Bobbi) has been identified as straight, closeted, bi, gay, or female in various casts dating from 1970 to the version now playing on Broadway in New York City.
