Circuits for Week 6

Hello-

PS: I fixed the broken link. Not sure what had gone wrong – anyway, homework PDF is now available.

I have posted the Circuits homework here.

The Reading is here (lab manual) and here (text pages).

The midterm solutions are here.

I can also report now that the 3rd edition of Horowitz & Hill’s The Art of Electronics is magnificent. If you like the readings in the 2nd edition, then I recommend getting the 3rd. It does appear that there will be a separate (much expanded) Lab Manual for this new edition, with more introductory material added to it, so it might be worth waiting for that if you find the text a bit too challenging. Supposedly due out later this year. If you really like circuits, though, the 3rd edition is likely going to have a very long shelf-life (the 2nd was still going strong after 25 years).

Best-

Neil

Similarities of Wave Behavior video from AT&T Archives

We watched some videos of wave behavior as part of Lab 33, and many of you commented favorably on how the videos helped make concrete and illustrate some aspects of wave behavior. The video Similarities of Wave Behavior https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DovunOxlY1k will strike some of you as similar to Frames of Reference in style. Some of the analogies to electrical engineering topics might not be that helpful, but there’s a huge amount here that should supplement the week 26 reading of Mazur Ch. 16.

Calculus and Physics Spring Midterm Exam Revisions

  • Calculus and Physics Exams 5 were handed back in Problem Session on Thu. Apr. 30. You can find blank versions of the exams at the Week 25 Calendar Page.
  • Revisions are due at 9 am on Mon. May 4.
  • Anyone may submit an Exam Revision.
  • Students who scored 40 points or less (out of 75 points total) on the Calculus exam must submit an Exam Revision.
  • Students who scored 45 points or less (out of 80 points total) on the Physics exam must submit an Exam Revision.
  • As usual, you may use your original exam, your notes from the group exam reflection, textbooks, notes, solutions, consultation with classmates, and any other resources to complete your Exam Revision. However, any work submitted must be a reflection of your own current, personal understanding – do not submit work which does not properly convey your current understanding.
  • The expectations for the Exam Revision are very high. We look for beautiful solutions that fully convey your conceptual understanding and/or problem-solving process.
  • For revisions of multiple choice or fill in the blank or ranking type questions, it is entirely insufficient and unacceptable to simply circle or fill in the right answer. You must carefully explain your reasoning for multiple-choice/fill-in-the-blank/ranking type questions.
  • We will look carefully at each revised question with the “3 C’s” in mind: Correctness, Completeness, and Clarity.
