Duties

The strategic objective of the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Prevention Program is to protect state waters by managing AIS. The incumbent’s primary duties are to conduct monitoring and control trapping efforts for European green crab (EGC), a Prohibited Level 1 species in the state of Washington, at Drayton Harbor. The incumbent will assist agency partners with a regional cooperative effort to conduct extensive trapping for assessing the full scope and scale of current EGC invasion and reduction of population numbers to manageable levels. The incumbent will lead field operations with direct trapping, training of local partner staff, conduct quality control of trapping efforts, collection of biological data, and data management. Key measurable objectives are the number of sites surveyed, number of traps set, number of EGC removed, number of partnerships created, volunteer recruits, maintenance of equipment, and all field data entered.

European Green Crab (EGC) Management Actions

Tasks include: 

  • Conduct extensive trapping for assessing full scope and scale of current EGC distribution and abundance.
  • Conduct removal trapping efforts to reduce population to manageable levels.
  • Protect native species by removing and humanely euthanizing captured EGC and other AIS species following AIS Unit protocols.
  • Conduct early detection monitoring at sites not previously surveyed.
  • Support local tribes and other local agencies with removal efforts as needed.
  • Participate in regional rapid response actions where new EGC are detected.

 Office Work

Tasks include: 

  • Data entry
  • Summarize data
  • Organize and file data.

 Equipment Maintenance

Tasks include: 

  • Maintains traps and trapping gear in proper working condition
  • Follows decontamination protocols when moving field gear from one waterbody to another.
  • Maintains vehicle, watercraft, trailer, electronic tablet, laptop, smart phone, and complex mobile water quality laboratory in a safe and working order.

 WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Approximately 85% field and 15% office. Outdoors on water and land during Washington’s inclement weather May to October, mostly as a team, but may work independently in remote locations, day and night, walk up to five miles on uneven ground, must be able to lift 75 pounds, and pack 50 pounds.

Schedule: 

  • Workweek will typically be Monday to Friday obtaining 40 hours but will be required occasionally to exceed these hours or work outside of normal workweek during holidays and weekends and may be required to respond on short notice to rapid response AIS emergencies.
  • Sunday to Saturday first 40.

Travel Requirements: 

  • This position requires frequent statewide travel and overnight stays up to five days at times.

Tools and Equipment: 

  • Personal computers, laptops, smart phones, electronic tablets, and electronic software forms.
  • Complex mobile water quality laboratory and non-electronic biological and environmental sampling devices.
  • Must safely transport and operate large equipment up to a 25-foot cargo trailer, watercraft, flatbed trailer, winches, motor vehicles, and complex hot water trailered pressure washers.

Customer Interactions:

  • Interacts with the public on a regular basis while conducting fieldwork.
  • Occasionally confronted by citizens that are non-compliant or not cooperative.

License:

  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license required.
Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

In addition, the position requires:

  • Washington State Boater Education card or equivalent.
  • Washington State driver’s license.
  • Experience and excellent safety record operating vehicles, motorized watercraft at least 15 feet in length, and towing trailers; and
  • Experience using Microsoft Windows, smart phones, electronic tablets, PC, and laptops.
