The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northwest Region. We are looking for a Forest Practices Technician to assist other office staff and field foresters in DNR’s Northwest Region to administer the Forest Practices Rules. The incumbent in the position processes Forest Practices Applications and associated documents, and assists applicants to accurately complete their application and to understand how the Forest Practices rules apply to their proposal. This supports DNR in its mission of providing resource protection and associated public services that build and sustain the Region’s capacity to carry out its regulatory functions.

This position’s duties include assisting in classification of Forest Practices Applications, processing applications/notifications and associated documents, archiving applications, maintaining files, and assisting customers. It also provides short-term backup to the Forest Practices Coordinator.

DNR’s Northwest Region Forest Practices relies on teamwork and pro-active communications within the group to be successful. The Forest Practices office personnel are pivotal in this success by communicating with the foresters, the applicants and management about potential issues and concerns. This position will consistently be representing the agency when speaking to landowners and the general public, and have to be able to adapt to their audiences.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Classify Forest Practices Applications (FPAs) and review for completeness.
  • Using mapping software, review FPAs for potential resource resource impacts.
  • Manage digital and hard copy files to process and track FPAs, hydraulic projects, Water Type Modification Forms (WTMFs), enforcement documents, SEPA documents, etc.
  • Answer technical questions about applicability of the Forest Practice Rules to an applicants proposal.
  • Assist the FP Coordinator with responding to complaints and public disclosure requests.
  • Draft and coordinate correspondence with applicants, public stakeholders, and other governmental bodies.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Associate’s Degree or higher in forest management or natural resources related field;
    Or
    Two years experience as a Natural Resources Technician 2, Administrative Assistant 1 or 2, or Office Assistant 3;
    Or
    Equivalent experience and/or combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the Forest Practices Rules, State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), and Forest Practices Board Manual.
  • Experience using computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Excel, and general office equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Standard.

Our ideal candidate will also have the qualifications listed below:

  • Experience managing multiple projects with various timelines, handle interruptions, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience communicating (written and oral) with customers (both internal and external) and immediate working group.
  • Experience completing multi-step evaluations with consistent attention to detail.
  • General Knowledge of Timber Harvest and Road Construction.
