This is an opportunity to serve as the lead to develop a comprehensive environmental sustainability plan which includes actions to minimize carbon footprint, maximize carbon sequestration, improve fleet practices, and move towards greater sustainability.
With your experience, you will work with a team to lead the development and implementation of a WDFW environmental sustainability plan. You will also help WDFW to build expertise and lead in new areas of carbon sequestration and accounting.

- Duties

Our Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will,
• In consultation with the Agency’s Conservation Policy Director and Deputy Director, convene and lead an internal WDFW sustainability workgroup (ESW). This position invites prospective members, schedules meetings, develops agendas and leads the development of a charter and workplan for the group
• Lead the ESW to develop and implement an environmental sustainability plan which must address but is not limited to, actions to address minimizing carbon footprint, maximizing carbon sequestration, reducing environmental impacts, and improving fleet practices and use of office space. Prepare and write the plan, based on input and guidance from the committee and provide review opportunities for the agency’s Deputy Director and Conservation Policy Director.
• Report WDFW carbon emission annually to the Department of Ecology, as required by state law. Data on carbon emissions is available in agency fleet and building records and must be reported by methodology established by the Department of Ecology.
• Serve as the WDFW representative to the SEEP (State Agency Environmental and Efficiency Performance workgroup) established through Governor’s Executive Order to identify improvements in state agencies.
• Communicate regarding WDFW’s environmental sustainability program to external audiences, as appropriate.
• Engage staff and managers in sustainability plan development and implementation through announcements on the intranet, surveys, workshops, and other methods.
Serves as the agency’s lead for carbon sequestration:
• Research methodologies for conducting a carbon inventory of WDFW lands and secure contractor expertise (as needed and as budgets allow). Work with Lands Program to conduct an inventory of stored carbon on WDFW lands and identify opportunities for additional sequestration. Develop best practices to account for and maximize carbon sequestration in grant making, restoration projects, mitigation guidance and other agency activities.
• Form partnerships with other agencies engaged in sequestration (for example, DNR, RCO, Commerce and Ecology) to share data, methodology and learning opportunities for staff.
• Provide educational materials and access to training programs for staff on carbon sequestration and programs for trading carbon credits in carbon market programs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards: Work is performed almost exclusively indoors in an office environment. Currently this position is working from home until COVID restrictions have been removed.
- Schedule (i.e., hours and days): Standard business hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the incumbent may be expected to adjust the work schedule to meet business needs. A flexible work schedule will be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to supervisory approval.
- Travel Requirements: Some travel is required, and is typically local or regional, to meet with clients, conduct business, or attend or provide training.
- Tools and Equipment: Duties require the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.).
- Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in natural resources or related field.
AND
Three years of professional experience in program development and implementation, environmental or natural resource planning.
OR
One year of experience as an Environmental Planner 3.
OR
Seven years of professional experience, as long as that experience is in program development and implementation, environmental or natural resource planning.

- Research and Analytical Skills/Abilities: Ability to research, evaluate and draw conclusions from data; support recommendations with facts and analysis; interpret and apply rules, laws, policies, and procedures.
- Communication Skills/Abilities: Ability to convey ideas and facts orally and in writing using language the audience will best understand.
- Consulting Skills/Abilities: Ability to partner with clients to identify and resolve complex or sensitive issues.
Relationship-Building Skills/Abilities: Ability to develop positive, productive, respectful working relationships with clients and co-workers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree or above.
Experience or training in carbon markets or carbon accounting
