In this position, you’ll work within both the Science and Management Divisions, playing a pivotal role in salmon recovery efforts by collecting crucial metrics at Priest Rapids Dam and conducting creel surveys in the upper Columbia River system.
Working outdoors alongside a team of biologists and technicians, you’ll sample adult Chinook salmon, record data, and interact with the public, all while embracing flexibility, long hours, and labor demands to contribute to the conservation of our natural resources. Duties
-
Here is what you will be doing,
- Adult sampling at Priest Rapids Dam:
- Function as part of a team performing routine monitoring to inform spawner escapement estimates of endangered spring Chinook Salmon within the Upper Columbia River.
- Accurately collect and record biological (species identification, length, weight, tags, marks, scales, genetics, etc.).
- Conduct creel surveys on lakes and streams to gather information on angler usage and harvest.
- Sampling fish metrics
- Attend and assist in making contributions to Team trainings, classes, project development meetings, protocol updates, and safety needs
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Work at all hours in inclement weather; walking up to six (6) miles on rugged uneven terrain in remote locations independently; lifting up to 75 lbs (5-gal buckets of water and fish and holding tanks).
- Use of standard chemicals for fish anesthesia (AQUI-S and MS-222) and sterilization chemicals (alcohol) is required.
- Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
- Schedule:
- Night, weekend, split, holiday, and on-call shifts will be required.
- Work in excess of 40 hrs per week is occasionally required to complete field activities during peak season.
- Travel Requirements:
- Daily travel in WDFW issued vehicles up to 2,500 miles per month.
- Tools and Equipment:
- PIT tagging equipment, valves, hoses, pneumatic gate controls, pumps, generators, various hand tools, vehicles, boots, waders, electronic tag detectors, GPS and computers.
- Customer Interactions:
- Extensive work with the public in conducting interviews and informing anglers of rules and regulations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
- Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science or other similar field of study.
- Familiarity and working knowledge of rotary smolt trap, electrofishing and mark-recapture methods and study design.
- Ability to identify juvenile and adult salmonids.
- Familiarity with the life-history and populations of salmonids in the Upper Columbia Basin.
- Experience applying PIT tags and familiarity with tagging software.
- Basic computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office software.
