Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.
You must be a current employee of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in a permanent, limited duration or seasonal position (not temporary) to be considered for this position (ODFW Seasonal employees who are not currently employed, but have recall rights, can also be considered for this position).
Play a part in providing healthy fish for Oregon! Take your passion for working in the outdoors by leading others and/or caring for fish and performing grounds and equipment maintenance at Bonneville Hatchery.
What you will do:
• Assist hatchery manager in setting work goals and priorities in order to meet production objectives. Train and lead hatchery employees and volunteers in the safe use of equipment, procedures and work practices. Organize work and assign jobs in order to meet production goals. Monitor progress of work being accomplished by hatchery employees and volunteers in order to report to the hatchery manager on the status of projects.
• Participate in fish rearing. Set and monitor water flows. Monitor fish growth, development, feedings and water flows and keep accurate records. Move and handle fish in rearing containers as needed to inventory, grade, mark, load, transfer or release. Trap and spawn adults; set up trap, sanitize and ready spawning area and equipment, operate trap, crowder, seines and have needed materials on hand. Determine species, stock, sex, maturity, ripeness and health. Observe for marks and tags and record information. Set up and sanitize incubation area and equipment. Receive and prepare eggs. Set up and maintain water flows to eye up eggs. Monitor eggs for health and development; treat eggs. Ready eyed eggs, determine when to pick, clean up, treat, inventory and tray down eggs.
• Monitor and operate hatchery water systems. Respond to emergencies and correct flow problems. Clean intakes, protect from freezing, check and service valves and pumps as needed.
• Maintain, construct, and perform minor repairs to ponds and walkways, fish feeders, egg trays, and screens. Maintain and repair hatchery buildings and residences, fish pumps, lawn mowers, power tools, roads, and trails.
• Meet the public, maintain public relations, answer questions, and conduct hatchery tours.

Working Conditions
• Work outdoors, at times during inclement weather.
• Work in or near cold, deep or fast moving water for extended periods of time.
• Requires lifting up to 50 pound bags of feed, cartons of drugs, and other heavy materials and equipment.
• Operate trucks, tractors and other equipment
• Handle chemicals used for treatment of fish or disinfecting of equipment for disease control purposes. Work with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants and solvents during routine maintenance duties. Required to climb ladders.
• Must display a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public.
• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work weekends on a rotational basis and may have to respond to emergency situations while working alone.
• This position requires living on station as a condition of employment and working on an on-call basis as assigned and available to respond to emergency situations.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
• An Associate’s degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science and two years and six months of fish culture (care of fish) experience. (twelve months of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR
• A Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework and one year of fish culture (care of fish) experience (six months of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR
• Four years of fish culture (care of fish) experience (two years of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).
