Upward Bound & Upward Bound Math-Science are U.S. Department of Education grants designed to increase post-secondary education enrollment and graduation rates of participating students. The grants fund the Upward Bound Tacoma program, which prepares 165 participants to be among the first in their families to earn college degrees and become leaders in their community.
Upward Bound provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The program includes year round academic support including an intensive six-week Summer Learning Institute providing additional instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and world languages with a residential component hosted at Evergreen. The program also offers monthly college visits and leadership experiences to participants during school breaks.
Upward Bound Tacoma’s services to students at Lincoln & Mount Tahoma High Schools supports the mission of The Evergreen State College to provide outreach and services to local communities.
The Upward Bound classic grant has been funded at The Evergreen State College since 1977, and both grants are beginning the fourth year of a five-year funding cycle.
The program is contingent upon continued federal funding.
