Week 8 Tutoring

(Friday 3/2 plan updated on 3/1)

Our program tutor is not available Wed – Fri this week. Here’s how we will adjust:

  • Tuesday 2/27: regular program tutoring
  • Wednesday 2/28: no program tutoring in 054
  • Thursday 3/1: Krishna available 9 – 9:30 and 11:30 – noon in CAL (before and after class); no program tutoring in 054
  • Friday 3/2: no program tutor in QuaSR; Krishna available 1:30 – 3 in Lab 1 054 (not sure what to do if the make-up QM lecture starts early) make-up QM lecture is from 1 – 3; Krishna will try to be available from 3 – 4 in Lab 1 054
  • Saturday 3/3: special program tutoring, 4 – 6pm in Lab 1 054
  • Sunday 3/4: special program tutoring, 10am – noon in Lab 1054

Calendar Page updated for Week 8

  • The Calendar page is accessible via the main navigation bar.
  • You can find a link to the Week 8 Reading Response form, as well as the questions assigned for Problem Set #8.
  • Reading Responses are due 10am Monday.
  • Problem Set #7 Solutions will be posted to the Calendar page by Saturday early afternoon.
  • Problem Sets #6 and #7 are due for submission by 1pm Mon. Feb. 26.
  • Quiz 6/7, to be administered at 1pm Mon Feb. 26, will cover materials from weeks 6 and 7.
  • Revisions for Quiz 5 are due by 9:30am Thu. Mar. 1.

Spring Quarter: Thermo/Stat Mech and Kinetics

In spring quarter, students can choose between two 4-credit options, or choose both for 8 credits:

  • Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics (4 credits, Professor Chowdary) continues the winter quarter work. Spring quarter topics include: free energy and chemical thermodynamics with Gibbs and Helmholtz energy, phase transformations of pure and mixed substances, dilute solutions and colligative properties,  (Chapter 5.3 – 5.5); Boltzmann statistics (Ch. 6), and quantum statistics (Ch. 7). Weekly class meeting schedule, structure, and workload are likely to remain similar to winter quarter.
  • Kinetics (4 credits, Professor Bopegedera) will cover reaction rates, rate law, orders, Arrhenius effects, molecularity, chain reactions, reaction mechanisms, the Eyring relationship, the Boltzmann distribution, and the Maxwell distribution of speeds. In addition there will be a lab component that will include a thermodynamics experiment, a kinetics experiment, and a spectroscopy/quantum mechanics experiment.
  • Please note: students doing a partial credit option in winter will require a faculty signature to be able to register again in spring; students taking all 16 credits of AMR in winter will automatically be registered through into spring.

Delayed Start, Thu. Feb. 22

  • We have a delayed start due to weather on Thursday February 22.
  • Campus opens and class begins at 10am.
    • We will have class from 10 – 11:30.
    • No in-class workshop time, but my plan had already been to outline some of the problems on this week’s problem set anyway.
  • You should prioritize your safety first (and always).
    • Arrive when you can, even if late; given the special circumstances, late arrivals today won’t be considered a problem.
    • If you can’t make it, get notes from a classmate.
  • ICE-12 posted to the Calendar page.

Calendar Page updated for Week 7

  • The Calendar page is accessible via the main navigation bar.
  • You can find a link to the Week 7 Reading Response form, as well as the questions assigned for Problem Set #7.
  • Reading Responses are due 10am Monday.
    • I’ve left the standard due date for Reading Responses because I want to support your good time management habits, but for this week, I will accept Responses until 10 am Wed. Feb. 21.
  • Problem Set #6 Solutions will be posted to the Calendar page by Saturday early afternoon; Problem Set #6 is due by 1pm Mon. Feb 19 but will be collected 1pm Mon. Feb. 26 (along with PS#7).
    • I’ve left the standard due date for Problem Sets because I want to support your good time management habits, even though PS#6 won’t be collected until the following week.

Week 7 changes

Due to the Presidents’ Day holiday on Mon. Feb. 19, we don’t meet Monday of Week 7. This changes our schedules in ways similar to Week 2, when we also missed a Monday:

  • Reading Response 7 will still be due by 10am Monday February 19.
  • We will not have a Quiz in Week 7; instead we will have a combined quiz on Week 6/7 material on Monday February 26.
  • Problem Set #6 and Problem Set #7 will be collected on Monday February 28 (but you should still complete Problem Set #6 by Monday February 19 as solutions will be posted the previous Saturday, as usual).
