I bet Dr. Solomon is smiling. This research is so important on so many levels. The most marginalized are at the most risk. But guess what we all live in the same universe.

When people think about detoxing they never think about shampoo or foundation etc. It is vitally important to bring this to light for public safety. Thank you for taking the time to research and talk about this overlooked problem! I personally am allergic to many many things test still need more information about specifics and health.

Than you for this project. It reminds me, once again, that none of us can trust the government to protet us. We have to be informed consumers. I will do better, to take care of myself!

This is a great topic to talk about. The idea of “proper” hygiene revolves around the use of toothpaste, body wash, and shampoo. That is just the basics. All products are capitalized on and can be extremely harmful to the individual using them. As a beauty professional, I see clients who come in day in and day out who talk about what works for them and what doesn’t. Usually what doesn’t work is the products that have hidden chemicals in them, put in there to make people dependent on their products. They will leave your hair or skin feeling dry and brittle, or create dandruff or other skin related issues unless you use their product. I could go on. Thanks for bringing awareness to this issue.

I really appreciate starting the conversation with consumers about being mindful of what products we use on our bodies and the harm that could persist if we don’t. I am just beginning this journey to non-toxic beauty. It feels so overwhelming and time consuming to read and understand labels. I found your resources helpful and thought provoking. I especially liked how you call for transparency in labels. Calling out the people making the product while educating the consumers is a great way to get everyone involved in this important conversation. Thank you!

In the class I’m currently in we learned a bit about how the FDA was created and the chemicals that use to be in food. Of course the fight is still raging on, but it’s true that hygiene and beauty products are for whatever reason slightly behind food. One of my all time favorite lipsticks– i discovered– was discontinued because slightly higher levels of lead than is allowed. I read that it had something to do with the coloring in it, but still I didn’t fully understand. It should not be allowed to call chemicals many different names to try to hide what is in a product and take away a consumers choice.

Thank you so much for bringing this out of the shadows. It seems that every aspect of living in a capitalist, neoliberal society always has an undertone obsessed with profit rather than humanity.
