The Benefits of Supporting Natural Biodiversity and Sustainability in an Urban Setting

As more and more of the world’s population moves to the cities and suburbs, there is an urgent need for creating a balance between human habitation and greenspaces. Within those greenspaces lies a need to bring awareness to the public regarding the beneficial uses of native plants, pollinator friendly gardens, food forests, reduction of mowed and irrigated lawns, planting and landscaping for wildlife diversity and sustainability, attracting and creating habitat for wildlife and birds, increasing tree canopy, and the use of ethical and harmless alternatives to pesticides within residents’ yards and communities. We aim to provide our community with information and solutions to creating healthier, safer, and more sustainable ecosystems.

There is SOOO much I love about this project. It had a nice flow to it and had real ways to bring nature into our lives in a sustainable way. I do many of these things already and now hove some more ideas. The area I struggle too in is with cats outdoors. I have maintained many feral colonies and have trapped, spayed and neutered (TNR). They are here because of us and we have a duty to protect them too and try to stop their feral populations. Their negative impact on wildlife is a struggle and I have driven many bunnies and birds to be rescued from the mouth of feral cats who can not be indoors.
Great information, great discussion topics. WELL DONE!!

That’s awesome. Thanks for such a kind reply Rebecca! We appreciate it. Yes, cats are a conundrum for sure and the situation is difficult.

Rebecca, thanks for your feedback! We appreciate it! I am happy to hear that you are already utilizing some of these practices. And thanks so much for spaying and neutering feral cats which will help the decrease the feral cat population and the threat they pose to so many creatures.

I really like that you went into the community to find resources. Focusing on Food Forrests and not Food Deserts was awesome. I enjoyed seeing how positive the outcomes can be, instead of just focusing on the negative seen in our society. (I focus on the negative far to much and this reminds me i should not.)
