Mazur 22.49. The answer in the back has q = square root(lots of variables). However, this should actually be q/2 = square root(lots of variables). The problem statement says that the first conducting ball is given a charge q; subsequently, those two identical conducting balls must then share that charge equally so each ball then has q/2. However, the answer provided incorrectly has each ball with charge q, hence the preceding correction.

Almost everyone has signed up to be a group leader for one of the Ascher seminars (contact me if you haven’t and you’re registered for the full 16 credits).  The schedule of leaders is here.  Please remember to post your seminar plan by 6 p.m. Monday in the week you signed up for.  Also remember that if you want to be in a particular discussion (and you’re not the leader) then you should post a comment or follow-up question to help the leader facilitate the discussion.  If you don’t post a comment on a project plan, then you’ll be randomly assigned to a group on Thursday.  Each small group will have about 6 people.  We’ll follow up with a large group discussion.

Due to the holiday, there are no class meetings on Mon. Jan. 19. The quiz on Week 12 material will begin at 9 am on Tue. Jan. 20 in Sem 2 D2105.
