Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a system of consistent, efficient, and reliable energy management for University facilities. Recommend and develop short and long-range plans for implementing energy innovations. Partner with Facilities managers to establish and implement a comprehensive energy reduction plan that aligns with existing facilities and renewal plans.
  • Oversee energy studies and coordinate essential energy projects, including cost-saving initiatives, efficiency projects, and implementation of energy conservation programs.
  • Coordinate with Facilities to develop projects, and staff training, that increase the control, efficiency and operational flexibility of BMS across the campus. Develop maintenance agreement and weekly reporting with vendor.
  • Work with consultants to develop controls improvements, design specifications, and adoption of standards and protocols for energy management systems. Conduct campus energy audits and formulate recommendations for facilities improvements.
  • Provide recommendations for capital allocation and the rebate recovery process.
  • Oversee development of long-term capital plan for SVA to meet carbon emissions reductions goals economically and effectively in line with SVA’s own plans as well as city and state regulations
  • Coordinate the Campus Energy Dashboard building integration. Manage energy and utility data within buildings and partner with departments to present energy consumption information to building occupants to educate, impact behaviors, and reduce energy consumption.
  • Manage data for energy performance metrics including: historic use, monthly use, annual usage, and EUI comparison calculations to support and track energy use, carbon emissions, and other metrics associated with energy management.
  • Create and maintain strategic relationships with key utilities and campus energy reporting vendors. Manage the Accounts Receivable process for utility bill purchase orders and tracks payments from input to closing.
  • Manage project delivery process from the development of scopes, schedules and budgets, coordination of shutdowns, tie-ins and contractor access, through end-of-project activities, including close-out and final payment activities.
  • Support all regulatory energy requirements including LL84 (Benchmarking), LL87 (Retro-Commissioning), LL95 (Energy Efficiency Grades), and LL97(Climate Mobilization Act), and SVA energy initiatives and programs, such as electrical demand response program, mandated energy usage reporting and the Mayor’s Challenge Program.
  • Fulfill project reporting requirements with NYSERDA’s On-Site Energy Manager Program, other programs as needed, and weekly capital projects meeting.
  • Establish and maintain effective communications and cooperative working relationships with colleagues, customers, stakeholders and partners to accomplish mutual objectives and mitigate impacts to ongoing academic activities.
  • Conduct weekly site visits and track project progress in order to ensure compliance with project performance goals, including quantitative cost and schedule targets, and achievement of quality, safety, and site protection standards.


  • Bachelors’ degree required or higher, from an accredited institution in Engineering or equivalent.
  • Five years professional experience with energy management and/or environmental capital projects, and an understanding of how to drive energy optimization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory energy requirements and programs, and familiarity with NY State’s long-term mandates for carbon emissions reductions.
  • Working familiarity with local incentive programs including Con Edison and NYSERDA
  • Strong data management and analysis skills; proficiency with Google Apps, Word & Excel, Procore, SchoolDude software is preferred. Ability to quickly learn and navigate new energy management systems.
  • Possess passion for the subject matter, and for consistent improvement and optimization of the company’s practices
  • Familiarity with construction documents, and understanding of construction trades and work, with ability to level and compare bid submissions accordingly.
  • High level of organizational, interpersonal, & written and verbal communication skills. The ability to troubleshoot, problem solve, and remain calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Self-starting attitude with proven ability to work independently and effectively within time constraints and changing priorities, and on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and interface appropriately with many different disciplines internally and externally in facilities, construction, design, academia and government
  • Willingness and ability to perform periodic inspections of job site conditions and project progress, including climbing stairs or ladders, accessing roofs, mechanical and electrical rooms. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work in tight spaces.
  • Ability to occasionally work outside of normal office hours, work evenings and/or weekends


  • Certified Energy Manager/LEED AP or other relevant accreditation/certification
  • PE Accreditation
  • Higher Education facilities management experience.
  • Experience in educating individuals and groups about new concepts and resources.
