AmeriCorps – Farm and Habitat Specialist
Nature & Purpose of the PositionThe Farm and Habitat AmeriCorps Member will support our farm planning and agriculture assistance program by assisting with farmer outreach, support, and education activities. They will also support our habitat improvement program by assisting with a wide range of restoration projects and activities. This position is intended to have a split focus between our farm and habitat programs with the goal of acquiring a diverse set of skills and experiences. It will include both field and office tasks, involve serving in both teams and independently, and will involve various activities and tasks within Pierce Conservation District. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of diversified agroecosystems, crop and livestock production operations, Puget Sound ecosystems and plant communities, an enthusiasm for riparian restoration, and a highly motivated work ethic. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience supporting local food systems, methods for maintaining riparian and floodplain restoration sites, native and invasive plant management, and public engagement through volunteer events and outreach.

Primary Job ResponsibilitiesThe Farm and Habitat AmeriCorps Member will work directly with the Habitat Restoration Manager and Crop and Livestock Farm Program Managers to fulfill project needs. Specific responsibilities are expected to include:
QualificationsWe are seeking a high-achieving, hard-working, self-motivating individual who is committed to protecting Pierce County’s natural resources. Candidates will have a general understanding of agroecosystems, crop and livestock production operations, Puget Sound ecosystems and riparian/floodplain environments of the Pacific Northwest. Attention to detail, an ability to clearly communicate thoughts and ideas, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team are critical to this position. Physical Requirements and Working ConditionsA large portion of duties related to this position will be in field environments. Field tasks take place in all types of weather conditions and may require performing tasks for up to 8 hours a day. This position requires the ability to walk long distances, maneuver in uneven or difficult terrain, carry heavy loads (up to 50 lbs), perform duties safely in and near water, maintain productivity with exposure to vexatious insects and/or other environmental stressors, and exercise good judgement in terms of personal and team safety in field conditions. This position may require application of herbicide under supervision of a licensed applicator and adhering to best management practices to control invasive weeds. The position will be 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with occasional work occurring on weekends.

Pierce Conservation District is looking for an AmeriCorps member to serve as Green Tacoma Partnership Habitat Stewardship Technician from September 2025 through July 2026. Nature & Purpose of the PositionThe Green Tacoma Partnership is seeking a passionate and dedicated Habitat Stewardship Technician to join our team. This position will support our Habitat Stewardship Program through a variety of tasks including habitat restoration, data management, leading volunteer events, and engaging in community outreach efforts. The Habitat Stewardship Technician sits within a team of PCD staff and partners that utilize restoration as a tool for climate resiliency, connection, and environmental care. This role works directly with community members to inspire stewardship and create positive impact in open spaces throughout the City of Tacoma. Our collaborative efforts with citizen volunteers to create a just food system, improve water quality, promote sustainable agriculture, and recover wildlife habitat, are the heart of our mission. Harvest Pierce County is the Urban Agriculture wing of Pierce Conservation District. With a focus on justice, connection, and equity, Harvest Pierce County’s vision is that our region has a thriving community engaged in a just and healthy food system. This is accomplished through reconnecting communities to each other and their food systems through gardening, gleaning, and educating Pierce County about their food and food systems. Role OverviewThis project will leverage the support of an AmeriCorps member to expand on Harvest Pierce County programs and provide education as it relates to urban agriculture and equitable food access. This position will support our Gleaning program, working to provide hands-on educational opportunities to volunteers, as well as managing volunteers on both fruit tree and farm gleans. The AmeriCorps Service Member will also help support community events such as our annual Seed Swap and Community Garden Networking events that occur periodically throughout the growing season, typically starting in June. They will provide technical assistance to staff in helping facilitate our Edible Gardens Workshop Series. Events, outreach, and workshops often occur on weekday nights or weekend days. Outreach events often entail the recruitment of volunteers, and support our community engagement efforts to share our programming with broader audiences, including our ongoing efforts to reach more diverse communities. Additionally, an AmeriCorps service member will be working closely with our staff members to support our annual Native Plant Sale from tracking pre-sale orders, to assisting crews to pack 40,000 native plants into individual orders.
