The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has two openings for a Natural Resource Specialist 2, in the Pacific Cascade Region located in Southwest Washington. - Duties

Responsibilities:The position is critical to planning, monitoring, and maintaining the natural conservation areas in the Pacific Cascade Region, as well as collaborating with area volunteers and partners. This position is highly visible to the public and acts as a primary point of contact in the field for visitors, volunteers, and a variety of stakeholder groups.

Required Qualifications:
- An associate degree in conservation management, field biology, ecology, forest management, or related natural resource field; and one year of professional experience as a Natural Resource Specialist 1 or equivalent.
Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience. - At least one year of experience working collaboratively with volunteers, user groups, the general public, and/or other stakeholders on natural resources-related issues/topics. Experience can be gained concurrently.
- Working knowledge of regulatory and/or policy arena, such as Natural Resources Conservation Areas Statewide Management Plan (1992), land-use policy, recreation use policy and practices, SEPA, Forest Practice Rules, Habitat Conservation Plan, Policy for Sustainable Forests, or similar.
- Working knowledge of forest management activities and State trust land responsibilities.
- Working knowledge of writing planning documents, preparing cost estimates, supervising, and coordinating design work, and negotiating with public officials and diverse agency staff.
- Experience in public outreach and/or environmental education.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Working knowledge of GPS systems and basic GIS principles.

- Works in the office and in the field. This position is primarily a field position, working approximately 75% in the field and 25% in the office. Individual must be able to traverse and drive in uneven rugged terrain under all weather conditions. Sustained vehicle operation for long periods of time (2-4+ hours). Sustained outdoor work (4-6+ hours) in adverse weather conditions. Field work may be performed alone, or with other DNR staff, WCC crews, volunteers, contractors, or others, in remote, backcountry areas. Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
- Requires some traveling alone between work/field sites in the region. Travel and overnight stay are required for training. During some training assignments, lodging and meals may be provided in a camp and/or dormitory environment.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Ability to obtain WSDA Pesticide license within 6 months.
- Successful completion of ATV & UTV safety training.
- Successful completion of DNR Trailer towing training.
- A bachelor’s degree involving major study in conservation management, field biology, ecology, natural resource, or related field and two (2) years of professional field experience in forestry resources, or park management (state or federal), natural resources, recreation management or in a closely related natural resource field.
- At least one year of experience working collaboratively with multiple organizations and/or agencies in a collaborative environment.
- At least two years of experience supervising and evaluating employee or work crew performance.
- At least one year of experience working collaboratively with volunteers, user groups, the general public and/or other stakeholders on natural resources-related issues/topics.
- Knowledge of grants, processes, and procedures.
- Knowledge of contracts and contract management.
- Knowledge of Northwest Flora and Fauna.
- Working knowledge of forest management activities and State trust land responsibilities.
- Experience working in or interfacing with the regulatory and/or policy arena, such as Natural Resources Conservation Areas Statewide Management Plan (1992), land-use policy, recreation use policy and practices, SEPA, Forest Practice Rules, Habitat Conservation Plan, Policy for Sustainable Forests, or similar.
- Experience writing planning documents, preparing cost estimates, supervising, and coordinating design work, and negotiating with public officials and diverse agency staff.
- Conflict resolution experience.
- Experience in public outreach and/or environmental education.
- Working with volunteers or experience as a volunteer.
- Advanced knowledge of software (PowerPoint, photo editing, Excel, Microsoft Project and Word), including experience in the use of GIS and GPS technology and software.
- Knowledgeable of forest management activities, forest-based land-use law, and practices; and the HCP.
- An associate degree in conservation management, field biology, ecology, forest management, or related natural resource field; and one year of professional experience as a Natural Resource Specialist 1 or equivalent.
