WILDLIFE AREA TECHNICIAN
NATURAL RESOURCE SPECIALIST 1

COLUMBIA BASIN WILDLIFE AREA
Moses Lake, Washington – Grant County

 

Anticipated Appointment Length: 18 months
 March 1, 2024 – September 1, 2025 

This is an opportunity to engage in impactful fieldwork by planning and carrying out diverse habitat management activities on wetlands throughout the Columbia Basin.

Envision yourself supporting day-to-day operations on various wetlands including water level manipulations, mechanical and chemical vegetation treatments, and monitoring to evaluate outcomes of treatments.

Some of what our Wildlife Area Technician will enjoy doing, 

Inspect wetland projects on the Columbia Basin Wildlife Area and collect information, assesses recreation use, infrastructure status, and habitat conditions: 

  • Conduct field inspections to gather data.
  • Monitor and adjust water levels and water control infrastructure.
  • Monitor habitat conditions to include vegetation and noxious weeds within and adjacent to wetlands.
  • Collect and enter registration cards from regulated access areas.

 

Performs skilled work in several trades for wetland habitat and infrastructure maintenance: 

  • A variety of trade work including carpentry, fencing, electrical mechanics, and small engine repair.
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides requiring an applicator’s license to control noxious weeds and manage for native habitat.
  • Operate farm equipment used for planting/growing desirable vegetation and for controlling undesirable vegetation.
  • Maintain kiosks, signs, and pick up litter.

 

Contribute to Wildlife Area planning for infrastructure development, and recreation and habitat development: 

  • Assist with or write grants for developing recreational access, habitat conservation (duck stamp and print), or land acquisition.
  • Manage area operation and maintenance of site conditions and public use.
  • Develops construction and maintenance projects for wetland sites

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • The position’s assigned duty station is the Columbia Basin Wildlife Area headquarters. 
    • Majority fieldwork – approximately 85% in the field and 15% in the office. Will have sustained outdoor work (4 – 6+ hours) in adverse weather conditions.
    • Navigate and drive on uneven, rugged terrain under all weather conditions, operate a four-wheel drive vehicle on highways, gravel or dirt roads and operate vehicles for long periods of time (2 – 4+ hours). 
    • Trail hiking, and ride all-terrain vehicles (ATV) on trails in moderate to difficult terrain.
    • Occasionally lift in excess of 45 pounds while performing duties. Supplies will include but not limited to, seed bags, equipment, and construction supplies. 
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. 
    • Work outside of these hours may be assigned as needed to complete work tasks and may include night and weekend hours. 
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Frequent single-day trips to work sites throughout the region.
    • Infrequent overnight travel to other areas of Washington, for up to one (1) week at a time may occur to attend conferences, training, or assist with fieldwork. 
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Trucks, pickups, all-terrain vehicles (ATV), utility-terrain vehicles (UTV), boats, trailers, tractor with several implements, mowers, sprayers, power washers, various pesticide sprayers, GPS units, hand and power tools and desktop computer.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Frequent interactions through telephone, within the community or during field work. Occasional interactions with customers who may be frustrated.     

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four (4) years of experience working with natural resources or outdoor recreation. 
    1. This may include experience such as a Natural Resource Worker, Natural Resource Technician, Scientific Technician, and Fish and Wildlife Biologist.

Please Note: College coursework in a related natural resource specialty area such as wildlife, conservation, range, agriculture, forestry, or out-door recreation or a closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience.

Experience: 

  • Operating and performing routine maintenance on chainsaws, quads, motorcycles, small excavators, and other light equipment, as well as hand and power tools common to maintenance and repairs.
  • Using Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to obtain WSDA public operator’s license within six (6) months of employment. (Provided by WDFW). 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

  • Working knowledge of vegetation management techniques and strategies specific to wetlands and riparian areas.
  • Experience with heavy equipment operation and maintenance. 
  • Critical thinking and the ability to make decisions based on the best available information.
  • Experience with general farming practices.
  • Experience with fence repair and construction.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). 
  • WSDA public operator’s license and experience with the use of herbicides.
