Be a part of the future of fish conservation in Washington while gaining valuable hands-on experience! Support Minter Creek Hatchery during the fall to spawn fall chinook, chum, coho, and White River Spring chinook salmon. Join Coulter Creek Hatchery in the winter and assist with the rearing ponds which includes rearing, marking, and moving of Deschutes fall chinook to Tumwater Falls Hatchery. We are recruiting to hire at the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2 level, and we will train a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 up to the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.

Depending on which level you are hired at, your salary range will be as follows:

Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 – $3,145 – $4,174

Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 – $3,454 – $4,602

With your experience, Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution.

Duties

Some of what our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 will enjoy doing, 

Fish culture: 

  • Calculate and feed fish their daily ration.
  • Clean ponds, raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Administer therapeutics, calculates, and administers drugs as prescribed.
  • Perform fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.

Operation and maintenance of equipment: 

  • Drive a planting truck to and from planting sites.
  • Organize and maintains hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

  • Enter data into forms and spreadsheets; demonstrates proficiency with computerized forms and accuracy in record keeping (fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, chemical usage, loadings).

Operation and maintenance of facility: 

  • Monitor water flow and quality parameters, takes water samples and readings such as dissolved gases, suspended settleable solids, and other parameters.
  • Respond to alarms and determine and take appropriate action.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Will work primarily at Minter Creek Hatchery and Coulter Creek. May work at Hupp Springs and other facilities if needed. 
    • Primarily outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme temperatures, rain, wind, snow, and will walk on the river, and through trees/brush.  
    • Will walk, climb, lift, and carry or move up tp 50 pounds frequently (may include 50 blocks of salt and 44 pound bags of fish feed).  
    • Perform strenuous physical activities, follow instructions, and complete assigned tasks, gather and compile data, and use sound judgment.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. Different hours may be required due to unforeseen environmental conditions such as flooding, windstorms, or power outages, spawning, or fish hauling/planting.
  • Standby:
    • Currently this position is required to provide standby for the Coulter Creek Hatchery. The response time between December and May is 30 minutes maximum. 
  • Housing: 
    • Housing is not provided.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Power and hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Will interact Suquamish Tribe, Gig Harbor Purse Seiner Association, department biologists, hatchery staff and volunteers to accomplish program goals.

Qualifications

This Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (In-Training) series provides mentoring and career development opportunities for candidates with limited hatchery and fish culture experience. 

Candidates will be hired as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2, dependent on skills and experience.

Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month in-training plan, the selected candidate will automatically be promoted to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1

  • Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.
                OR
  • An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or a closely allied field.
                OR
  • Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or a closely allied field.
                OR
  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school.

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (Goal Class):

  • One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 AND successful completion of agency supervised training program.

  OR

  • Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

 OR

  • Two (2) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR

  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

Please Note: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) or four (4) year degree in Fisheries or closely associated field.
  • One (1) year experience working at a hatchery and has performed standby duties.
