Duties

  • Enumerates and monitors hatchery and wild salmon/steelhead redds plus live/dead fish counts with “Index” reaches surveyed every 7 –14 days.
  • Collects biological data (scales, fin marks, coded wire tag, otoliths, DNA) on dead fish. 
  • Surveys and enumerates Pacific and Brook lamprey visible redds and live/dead counts.
  • Drives to and from surveyed reaches on both highway and off-road conditions.
  • Enumerates and monitors salmon/steelhead redds and live/dead fish counts during peak spawning. 
  • Tracks weather and stream flows, data organization and checks errors.
  • Performs hatchery sampling, mainly Chinook, lengths, scales, and checks for CWT (Coded Wire Tags).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    • Surveys can occur alone or at times with others in a wide variety of terrain and stream substrate conditions.
    • Fieldwork is performed in inclement weather and visibility conditions. 
    • Field work can be strenuous while walking in or along streams with slick boulders, crawling over logjams, wading across riffles with moderate – fast current or maneuvering watercraft. 
    • Repetitive lifting and maneuvering 40 pounds of equipment.
  • Schedule:   
    • Work hours are generally 40 hours per week – weekends and holidays are included as potential workdays.
    • Workdays and hours are determined by weather, stream flows, visibility, and degree of spawning activity. 
    • A flexible hourly and daily work schedule is required to perform the assigned tasks.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    • Raft, drift boat, pontoon boats, or jet-pump equipped sled in a wide range of stream flows, stream viewing conditions, and obstacles.
    • General raingear, waders, wading shoes raincoat, and a WDFW hat.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interaction with the public. 
    • Need to have good positive communication skills. 
    • Good public relation skills.
  • Other:
    • Maintains accurate field notes. Follow instructions and established protocols and procedures to conduct salmonid /lamprey redd counts.
    • Must work well independently in both office and field environments.
    • Must be able to work well in teams.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science. 

       AND

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. 

        OR
 

  • Two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 Please note: 

  • Volunteer work or past experience with state or federal agencies in technical field positions will be evaluated, and credit given, on a case-by-case basis.
  • College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A valid driver’s license is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • General knowledge of biology, in-the-field identification, and monitoring of live and dead salmonids, salmonid/lamprey spawning activity by species. 
  • Basic safe operation of rafts and boats in moving waters. 

 Ability to:

  • Clearly and concisely fill out field data forms. 
  • Work with basic computers and have data entry skills. 
  • Follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Communicate effectively and interact with the general public. 
  • Drive safe and be a defensive driver while operating State vehicles. 
  • The ability to swim is highly recommended not required.
