These are opportunities to assist with the Western Pond Turtle population and disease monitoring.

With your experience, you will accurately and legibly record and organize data and other information into appropriate databases.

We are seeking candidates with demonstrated skills representing WDFW values of professionalism, accountability, empathy, integrity, and respect.

Duties

Our Western Pond Turtle Technicians,   

  • Use radio-telemetry and visual surveys to track and monitor Western Pond Turtles
  • Safely navigate by foot around Western Pond Turtle occupied ponds and nesting areas.
  • Excavate, mark, and monitor nests according to protocol and collect nest data.
  • Set up traps and participate in capture, marking, and release of Western Pond Turtles.
  • Follow protocols to deploy traps to capture and safely handle live Western Pond Turtles.
  • Use small non-motorized boats to safely navigate Western Pond Turtle occupied ponds.
  • Assess Western Pond Turtles for disease status and take samples for disease testing.
  • Bring Western Pond Turtles to veterinary hospital for Computerized Tomography (CT) scans.
  • Attach radio transmitters to female Western Pond Turtles.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Approximately 90% Fieldwork and 10% Office work.
    2. Fieldwork entails walking, bending, and stooping while at times carrying over 50 pounds over difficult terrain.
    3. Must be willing to perform aquatic surveys in small ponds/lakes during inclement weather – field sites may contain ticks, rattlesnakes and poison oak.
  • Schedule:
    1. Must be available for non-scheduled workweek and willing to work irregular hours.
    2. Monitoring occurs from mid-morning until sunset, seven days a week.
    3. Weekend work will be required.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Safely operating motor vehicles and small boats in field situations.
    2. Tools and equipment needed to conduct wildlife projects.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Public interest groups in field and meeting environment.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from High School or GED, including one year of high school science.

AND 

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

     OR

  • Two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.  (College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes).

Knowledge of:

  • Wildlife population relationships and ecology.
  • Wildlife survey methods.
  • Scientific principles and techniques.
  • Personal computer hardware and software (Microsoft Office).
  • Use of tablets (iPad).
  • Species identification of reptiles.
  • Wildlife management tools and field techniques including experience working with non-hunted (non-game) species.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work and/or academic experience with radio-telemetry.
