The Regional Representative serves as PCTA’s primary staff on the ground along the trail working closely with staff, volunteers, and nonprofit and agency partners.

This position:

  • Develops and maintains the organization’s regional programs to ensure excellent maintenance, management, and protection of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and its related facilities.
  • Facilitates the cooperative work of the agencies, partners, and volunteer groups responsible for the PCT experience as established through the National Trail System Act and relating policies.
  • Carries out the policies, procedures, and positions established by the PCTA and works with trailwide PCTA staff to develop and refine that direction.
  • Supervises staff working from the regional office, as well as volunteers within the region
  • Works with partners within the region to collect information, establish priorities, and develop strategies that allow partnerships to accomplish broad overall goals for the PCT found in PCTA’s Strategic Plan.
  • Implements PCTA’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in regional programs.

What Makes You a Great Fit for this Position?

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resource or environmental management, outdoor recreation management, planning, public administration, environmental education or related field, or commensurate experience
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience

About the Pacific Crest Trail and the PCTA:

The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) spans 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington. One of America’s National Scenic Trails, the PCT reveals the beauty of the desert, the glaciated expanses of the Sierra Nevada, and the deep forests and commanding vistas of the Cascade Range. Untold thousands of hikers and equestrians enjoy this international treasure each year. Some only travel a few miles, while others complete every mile in a single season. 

The mission of the PCTA is to protect, preserve and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as a world-class experience for hikers and equestrians, and for all the values provided by wild and scenic lands. PCTA’s many stakeholders include hikers, equestrians, volunteers, members, donors, trail communities, public land managers, and many other partners. Typical Working Conditions and Travel:

The Regional Representative works under the Director of Trail Operations; however, they are expected to prioritize their work to meet day-to-day demands and ongoing assignments effectively. In addition, they are expected to communicate regularly on work projects and seek advice on new or controversial aspects of the work. This position is office-based and works from a satellite office located within the region. Regular overnight travel is expected, as is an irregular work schedule that will include weekend and evening work. PCTA covers travel expenses.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range is $53,000 – $79,000. Starting salary is dependent on the level of experience.

Benefits include paid holidays, vacation, and sick time, health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability. Eligible for 401(k) plan after one year of employment.

Eligibility Requirements:

As part of the new hire process, the successful candidate will be asked to complete a Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act. As part of this compliance, the successful candidate must present documents, which identify you and indicate you are eligible to work in the United States within three days of hire.

The new hire process also includes conducting a criminal history record check after a conditional offer is made to the candidate. If there are convictions on the report, PCTA conducts an individualized assessment as to whether any convictions have a direct and adverse relationship with the specific job duties of the position. PCTA will consider the offense, how long it’s been since the applicant committed the offense and the nature of the job the applicant is applying for.
