This position is the regional policy lead for Region 2 and is the Director’s voice in the region on all matters related to implementation of the WDFW’s mission.

This position, in collaboration with Program Directors, ensures a highly functional regional management team that is working in close coordination and with excellent communication to deliver each program’s independent and shared goals.Duties

Provides strategic guidance and decision-making on regional and agency-wide priorities. A key outcome of this position is ensuring internal and external coordination and effective communication throughout the region and with other executives. The regional director promotes agency operational effectiveness and accountability and an agency culture that results in a positive, productive work environment.

Collaborate with Program Directors and demonstrate excellent communication to deliver each program’s independent and shared goals.

Lead the implementation of a diversity and inclusion strategy executed at the regional level by supervisors, managers, and staff

Provides inter-program coordination, communication, and policy direction in the field. This position leads the Regional Management Team and is expected to resolve issues at local levels, promote cross-program cooperation, coordinate service delivery, share information on agency direction, resolve regional issues, and develop regional operating procedures.

Works with nine Fish and Wildlife Commissioners to develop and implement WDFW Policies, goals, and objectives.  The Regional Director represents WDFW and the State within Federal, Regional, Tribal, and International forums and organizations that affect the management of Washington’s fish and wildlife resources.

Responsible for developing and sustaining positive relationships with the Treaty and Executive Order Tribes of Washington.

Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with local elected officials, and legislators in Region 2

County Commissioner coordination is a key part of this position as well. Develop and strengthen outreach programs within the community.  

Reflects the values of the WDFW and supports regional staff in the expression of these values.

Manage the regional office facility and supervise the office support staff.   

Working Conditions

As an exempt employee, incumbent is expected to be available to work as needed beyond normal (8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Regular travel, including overnight stays is required. Travel to agency headquarters in Olympia can be expected on a routine basis. What does “EMS” mean? Exempt Management Service (EMS) is the term used to identify positions exempt from state civil service law. These positions do not have the same rights as classified positions. A position can be designated exempt either by statute or by the Director of State HR at the request of the Governor or other elected official.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:                                

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Natural Resources or related field

And,

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible natural resource management experience with a demonstrated ability to establish and accomplish goals and objectives, and communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

A demonstrated commitment to fish, wildlife, and resource management. Ability to serve as a proactive advisor and consultant to the Director.

A demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with federal, state, local, and tribal government officials, elected officials, the media, special interest groups, and other constituents and stakeholders.

Proven ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively, facilitating team approaches to problem-solving.

Proven leadership skills.

Knowledge of federal and state laws as they apply to tribal treaty fishing and hunting rights

Note: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year by year basis.
