In addition to the qualifications listed below, we are also looking for a candidate who will bring the following to the position: 

  • A genuine passion for nature, conservation, and environmental education.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a talent for crafting compelling stories that resonate with diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of the Channeled Scablands’ geological and cultural history is a plus but not mandatory; a willingness to learn and immerse yourself in the subject matter is essential.
  • Previous experience in interpretive services, education, or a related field is advantageous.
  • Ability to lead groups in outdoor settings, ensuring safety and enjoyment for all participants.

Duties

Under supervision of the Parks Interpretive Specialist 2, this position supports Parks mission by assisting in the management of the Dry Falls Visitor Center and professional level support to the Coulee Corridor Area parks which include Potholes, Sun Lakes-Dry Falls, Steamboat Rock, Northrup Canyon, and Crown Point State Parks.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Staffing the front desk during business hours and provide orientation and area-wide information services for the visiting public.
  • Selling Discover passes and educate visitors on rules and regulations.
  • Provide supportive services to maintain public outreach with government agencies, schools, and non-profit organizations.

Assist in the development and delivery of formal interpretive program presentations for a variety of venues and programming for including park visitors, schools, and tour groups:

  • Conduct technical research to design and develop thematic interpretive and educational programming including guided walks, talks, Junior Ranger programs, and living history programs.

Assist with internal and external exhibits as well as interpretive media publications, brochures, panels, signage, and other educational materials:

  • Assist self-guided interpretive projects based on area needs and proposed budget plans.
  • Helps to keep educational collection in order and assists with curator activities.
  • Maintains relevant records and library resources for use in interpretive programming and exhibits.
  • Helps maintain the facilities of the Dry Falls Visitor Center, restrooms, garbage cans, picnic tables, walkways, and Interpretive signs and panels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A bachelor’s degree involving major study in interpretation of Pacific Northwest history, American history, anthropology, geology, forestry, archaeology, ecology, or an allied field.
  • A valid unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) driver’s license.

**Experience in historic preservation or in historic or natural science research or interpretation may be substituted year-for-year for education.**DESIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Previous experience in interpretive services, education, or a related.
  • Strong public speaking and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and self-manage while using good judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and concisely, both written and oral.
  • Knowledge of the Channeled Scablands’ geological and cultural history or willingness to learn and immerse yourself in the subject matter.
  • Ability to lead groups in outdoor settings, ensuring safety and enjoyment for all participants.
  • Ability to foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, ensuring that all visitors feel empowered to explore and engage with the natural wonders around them.
  • Knowledge of conservation efforts and the ability to promote responsible visitor behavior and advocate sustainable practices.

UNIFORM INFORMATION:
All Parks Interpretive Specialists are required to wear a uniform.  A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of an Interpretive Specialist and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee.  All Parks Interpretive Specialists will receive the same standard uniform that is issued to the Park Ranger series, to include: shirts, pants, shorts, headwear, sweater, belt, necktie, jacket and badge.
