Position Description

*This part-time temporary position is available for up to 900 hours in a rolling year.  *This OOC opportunity is open to all regular Parks Staff who meet the minimum qualifications (internal opportunities for advancement will be given priority consideration).

Our staff manages a 6,414-acre park system of over 485 parks and extensive natural areas. SPR provides athletic fields, tennis courts, play areas, specialty gardens, and more than 25 miles of boulevards and 120 miles of trails. Our park system comprises about 12% of the city’s land area.

As a Custodial Utility Laborer, you will provide clean, safe and welcoming facilities to all residents of Seattle at our various structures including 27 Community Centers, Teen Life Centers, four Environmental Education Centers, Crew Quarters, Administration Buildings, shelter houses and satellite sites. The Custodial Utility Laborer will have charge of a small to medium community center and/or public assembly facility. The successful candidate must have knowledge of hand and power tools, and be able to properly and safely operate various types of machinery and equipment. Employees in this class perform duties in a physical location separate from their lead worker or crew chief, and more independently than at the Laborer level.

Job Responsibilities

All work is performed in a public setting requiring positive interaction with a diverse audience including youth, teens, seniors, and those of underrepresented and disadvantaged communities.

Daily tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning and stocking restrooms, shower facilities and kitchens
  • Collecting and emptying garbage, recycling and compost bins
  • Clean and maintain all floors, walls, and window surfaces
  • Clean and tidy lobbies, offices and program areas
  • Mix and use cleaning solutions and chemicals, as directed and in compliance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Provide support for events and programs: set up/take down of chairs, tables, equipment; cleaning
  • Maintain supply and equipment inventory
  • Create maintenance reports
  • Communicate effectively with patrons, staff and community center coordinators to determine and prioritize facility needs
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Successful candidates will be able to work independently requiring good organizational skills. The successful candidates must be able to prioritize work, meet strict deadlines and report out completed tasks.

Qualifications

Required:
Six months of experience performing general laboring/manual work, good physical condition, and the ability to work with hand and power tools is required.

Desired:

  • Two years of custodial experience in large-scale facilities (ie: community centers, pools, motels, hospitals)
  • One year of floor care maintenance (automated floor scrubbing machine use a plus)
  • Demonstrated use of small hand tools such as vacuums, floor machines, floor burnishers, carpet cleaning equipment
  • Have knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals and safety rules
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Familiar with using computer programs such as; MS Word, MS Excel and some type of email such as Outlook
  • Are customer-focused in building and maintaining positive internal and external customer relationships
  • Have an effective communication style and the ability to express ideas and concepts effectively in a variety of settings with a diverse audience
Additional Information

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Shifts can start as early as 04:30 am.  May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Required to work outdoors in all types of weather. Frequently required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. May occasionally be required to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds. Frequently requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances. PPE required.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:
Current Washington State driver’s license.  A current, “FULL” driving abstract from the Department of Licensing submitted upon offer of employment. Candidates with driving history that does not meet our current safety standards will be disqualified from consideration.

0 POINTS – PARKING TICKETS
1 POINT EACH – Any moving violation, collision, stop sign, defective equipment, speeding, seat belt, failure to signal, cell phone, etc. – any and all moving violations
4 POINTS EACH – Suspended license, negligent driving, reckless driving, racing.
5 POINTS EACH – Hit & Run, Vehicular Assault, DUI/DWI or other Alcohol-related offense.

*If your total score is more than 3 points you may not be considered for employment in a position that requires driving.

**Other certifications including Forklift, First Aid, Flagger card, may be required for certain positions.
