SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS: Native Plant Nursery Manager is responsible for the care and maintenance of Indian Creek Nursery, associated grounds, and storage buildings, including outdoor spaces such as lawns, trees, open spaces, watering system, and nature trails. The manager is responsible for the maintenance of seasonal large stock vegetation in the nursery including deciduous and coniferous trees including shrubs. The candidate should be in good physical condition and able to operate mechanized farm equipment (e.g., tractor, skid steer, UTV/ATV, and implements). The manager is responsible for maintenance of the irrigation system, including the points of withdraw, the circle pivot, pumps, valves, automatic watering controls and supply lines. The manager will procure local and seedling plant materials to stock the nursery annually. The operator will keep an inventory and mange plants successionally (availability by size and year) for future distribution to all identified project recipients to be kept on a list.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Operates and maintains the Tribal Native Tree/Shrub Nursery and grounds maintenance at Indian Creek Community Forest. Managing the nursery budget, completing reports, and completing grant funding requests is a requirement of this position. Knowledge of the ecology and propagation of different types of native trees, plants, seeds, and flowers, skills with common landscaping tools and machines, and techniques in irrigation and landscape design are necessary requirements for this job. The Nursery Manager will provide plant materials grown at the nursery for restoration work. The Nursery Manager will collect and propagate native plant cuttings or seedlings of deciduous and coniferous native tree species in the nursery. Other activities include mowing, maintaining signs, removing accumulated trash, raking, watering trees, shrubs, and grass, building maintenance, snow removal, and providing information to the general public. The candidate may be required to apply pesticides to the landscape and will need a state public operator’s license. A typical workday may require you to use various manual and mechanical tools, including lawn mowers, rakes, shovels, tractor, and skid steer with assorted attachments. The candidate may also use equipment to fertilize soil, apply herbicides, plant grasses, shrubs, and/or trees. May assist others in speaking to the public on conservation issues and interact with others in the Kalispel Natural Resources Department, US Forest Service, and other agencies and/or Tribes.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will supervise up to three seasonal technicians.

RECRUITING INDICATORS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):

Knowledge of: Botany and native plants, forestry, plant propagation techniques, irrigation and water systems, and grounds maintenance. Ability to: Communicate effectively, interpret, and implement instructions. Experience operating and maintaining related field equipment, operating and maintaining water delivery systems and pumps, operating and programing irrigation controls, working independently, identifying and treating noxious weeds, writing reports, and maintaining a budget.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A.A. degree in Horticulture or a Natural Resources field is required and 2 years of experience in horticulture or natural resources; OR B.S. degree and 1 years of experience in horticulture or natural resources field.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment for Natural Resources staff is multifaceted. Outdoor conditions make it necessary to be able to work and hike in inclement weather conditions and over variable and rugged terrain. Work could include in water wading or other on-water work. Potential exists for interactions with wild animals, bees, and other natural hazards. Indoor work can require long periods of sedentary work interfacing with others in meetings or completing reporting or data entry at a computer station. Work may also require specific specialized equipment operation (i.e., snow machines, tractors, etc…), regional travel, and overnight stays.

Experience Required

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and meet the Tribal Vehicle policies and standards for insurability.
  • Pesticide public operator applicators license or ability to test and become licensed within one year of hiring
  • Basic knowledge of native plants, field botany or equivalent experience or understanding.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office suite, and basic computer programs.
  • Ability to maintain an accurate inventory and out planting schedule of nursery stock and tree availability.
  • Ability to operate and maintain tractors, UTVs, ATVs, riding lawn mowers, and other related equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to manage a budget and draft reports for nursery operations.
  • Ability to complete grant funding requests for nursery operations.
  • Experience operating and maintaining a plant propagation facility.
