ASSISTANT PRESCRIBED FIRE CREW TEAM LEADER 


WDFW Wildlife Program

Anticipated Season: 9 Months 
March 15th – December 17th

Picture yourself supporting the WDFW mission by coordinating and performing professional and skilled fire regime restoration efforts while supervising a professional prescribed burn team.

This is an opportunity to support fire dependent dry forests, rangelands, and wildlife habitats through safe fuels reduction, reconfiguration, and implementation of prescribed burns on WDFW owned/managed lands.

With your experience, you will serve as a burn team assistant supervisor for the South Central Washington Zone.

Duties

Our Assistant Prescribed Fire Crew Team Leader, 

  • Leads a team of six professional Natural Resource Technician 2’s.
  • Provides technical and administrative supervision while helping accomplish overall ecological fire management goals.
  • Supervises the day to day accomplishments.
  • Assists with scheduling and adjusting short term priorities.
  • Improves production and increases the quality of work directed.
  • Assists in the development of performance standards and evaluates work performance with the Prescribed Fire Crew Team Leader (Natural Resource Specialist 2).
  • Accomplishes overall ecological fire management including planning and preparation of tools and equipment, preparation of burn areas, line construction, fuels inventory and area layout.
  • Implements firing techniques using firing devices, post burn monitoring/patrolling and mop up functions.
  • Maintains ecological function of natural systems for the benefit of wildlife and fisheries habitat.
  • Provides on the job training to complete tasks within the team functions. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Work is performed in an office environment as well as in the field.
    2. Field work includes working in remote locations, adverse weather, and in often smokey conditions on uneven terrain while carrying a fire field pack and tools.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typical Schedule is Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
    2. Work hours will remain flexible to ensure program goals are achieved.
    3. Work will exceed 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week during prescribed burning seasons.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Frequent travel to conduct implementation of fuels projects, especially during prescribed burning.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Firefighting tools and equipment, including engines, hand tools, pumps and water handling equipment, and chainsaws.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interactions with other agencies, contractors and the public will occur regularly.
    2. Interactions include communicating/explaining fire control.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma or GED.

AND 

  • One (1) year of experience as a timber faller, forestry equipment operator, forest technician, lead worker in forestry activities, or wildland suppression activities.

     OR 

  • An Associate’s degree in a natural resource technology program may substitute for the one (1) year of required experience.

 AND 

  • Three (3) months of experience as the supervisor or lead of a forestry crew.

 AND 

  • Three (3) years of experience on prescribed burns or wildland fire suppression.

 AND 

  • Must be qualified as a FFT1 (Firefighter Type 1).
  • Must be capable of passing the arduous physical fitness standard of carrying 45-pound pack 3 miles in 45 minutes.
  • Must be 18 years old at time of employment.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Must hold a valid state driver’s license at time of hire.
  • Must be certified and current under National Wildfire Coordinating Group specifications and standards.
    1. Qualified as FFT1 having received training in:
      • Introduction to Incident Command System (I-100).
      • Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180).
      • Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190).
      • Firefighter Training (S-130).
      • Advanced Firefighter (S-131).
      • Look Up, Look Down, Look Around (S-133).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in forestry, agriculture, aqua culture, business, engineering, geology, forestry, or a related natural science.
  • One (1) year of professional experience in forestry, agriculture, aqua culture, business, engineering, geology, forestry, or a related natural science.
  • Career oriented toward fire ecology/science and learning to use fire to achieve resource management objectives.

Trainings: 

  • Portable pumps and water use (S-211)
  • Initial attack incident commander (S-200)
  • Intermediate fire behavior (S-290)
  • Firing Operations (S-219)
  • Facilitator Instructor(M-410)
  • First-aid/CPR certification or similar certification such as first responder.

Knowledge of: 

  • Use of fire management tools and fuels inventory tools.
  • Equipment operation (ATV, UTV, 4-wheel drive vehicles, brush fire engine, water pumps).
  • Use of water handling equipment.

Ability to:

  • Train and mentor and develop subordinates with informal training and formal training classes.
  • Effectively work with multiple individuals from multiple organizations towards a common goal.
