Planned Schedule:  Tuesday-Friday from 9:30 – 2:30, either Sat or Sun from 11:30-4:30, and some evenings for special events.  (Up to 25 hours per week)
 
Who we are:
The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC) seeks to engage our audiences in the appreciation of art, history, and culture of the Inland Northwest and beyond, through collection stewardship, exhibitions and programs that enrich and inspire. Established in 1916, the MAC is the oldest cultural organization in Spokane, Washington, and serves over 100,000 visitors each year from around the region. The museum collections contain over 63,000 objects, including the largest known collection of Plateau tribes art and artifacts.
 
What you will be doing:
The agency exists to inspire and foster understanding of the history, native and diverse cultures, and art of the Inland Northwest; its mission is to “create experiences that connect our audiences to the unique history, native and diverse cultures, and art of the Inland Northwest.” In this position, you will support the agency’s goal to increase attendance and build audience by leading historic Campbell House Complex interpretation, and assisting with implementation and evaluation of interpretive programming that enlivens the house museum and provides an exceptional visitor experience. Museum Educator is responsible for leading and implementing museum youth programs.

Duties
Some of what you’ll enjoy doing includes:

  • Deliver interpretive tours to ensure successful visitor experience in historic house complex. 
  • Responsible for weekday operation of Campbell House and Carriage House. 
  • Conducts research on regional history (people, business, tribes, etc.).
  • Delivers oral reports to visitors about community heritage and history, often as living history (first person) interpreter. 
  • Expresses interpretive concepts clearly and concisely to ensure that interpretation is both age-appropriate and fosters family learning. 
  • Conducts occasional visitor research to ensure exceptional visitor experiences. 
  • Develops and tracks attendance and engagement metrics.
  • Deliver museum programs for K-12 students during School Visit programs and Museum Summer Camps.
  • Meet and lead school groups and campers during their visit, preparing materials, i.e., exhibit guidebooks, activities, pencils, clipboards, lunch facilities. 
  • Deliver museum curriculum aligned with education National and State standards.
  • Collaborating with the Education Managers and VTS trainers to plan and execute events related to school programs; working with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, train and supervise volunteers for these events.  
  • Working at events, as needed.

Qualifications
REQUIRED: 
Bachelor’s Degree in History, Education, Anthropology, Teaching, History, Art, Theater or Museum Studies
 
OR
 
Equivalent experience delivering tours or educational programs.

AND

  • Ability to lift/move/transfer 30 pounds.
  • Ability to express interpretive concepts clearly and concisely. 
  • Demonstrated success in creating exceptional visitor experiences. 
  • Passion for sharing the region’s stories with audiences of all ages, cultures, and learning preferences through a variety of media (printed, electronic, visual, etc.).

PREFERRED:

  • Degree in History, Education, Anthropology, Teaching, History, Art, Theater or Museum Studies.
  • Understanding of inter-generational & individual learning styles, cultural dynamics, and AAM best practices.
  • Working knowledge of AAM standards of interpretation and Visual Thinking Strategies interpretive techniques.
