Job Summary

Do you enjoy working with people and are passionate about getting people outdoors to enjoy our local parks?  The Assistant Park Ranger reports to the Lake Hills Greenbelt Park Ranger and works to introduce people to the outdoors and get people outside into nature and building communities through developing, delivering, and marketing environmental programs for adults and families, staffing our visitor center, providing administrative support, and programming assistance.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and deliver environmental education and interpretive programs including nature walks, education programs, facility tours, provide workshops support, attend special events, and other outreach programs.
  • Assist Natural Resource staff in program areas including, but not limited to, the Park Ranger Program, Community Garden Program, Bellevue Naturalist Training Program, and other Parks & Community Services programs.
  • Provide support at the Lake Hills Ranger Station and associated programs. Duties include program delivery, development, and marketing, facility staffing, responding to customers. Tasks may include program development, marketing, program delivery, program administrative tasks, opening/closing facilities, answering phones, greeting visitors, answering questions, conducting surveys, and guiding tours.
  • Assist Park Ranger with administration of the Summer Park Ranger Program including program scheduling, staff training, staff organization, and overall program coordination.
  • Conduct park patrol duties as needed including park/trail patrols, providing customer service to park patrons, educating patrons regarding park rules and regulations, maintaining visitation and patrol logs, and conducting park/trail inspections.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations in the Park System.
  • Assist with the development of various forms of interpretive media including flyers, brochures, displays, and exhibits.
  • Assist with other Natural Resource Division special projects, events, and operational duties as assigned.


 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Education or experience in communications, education, natural resource management, wildlife science, environmental education, environmental interpretation, forestry, or other related fields preferred or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Experience developing and delivering public outreach programs, interpretive media, and/ or education programs on environmental topics preferred.
  • Experience working with a Community Garden or other community-building projects.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required. 
  • Strong customer service, written, and oral communication skills essential.
  • Must be able to work with the public, volunteers, contractors, and staff as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public in a courteous, diplomatic, and professional manner essential.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and make decisions independently.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed is essential.
  • A criminal background check is required on all applicants.
  • Required to possess a valid driver’s license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record according to City standards. Current original drivers abstract required at time of interview.

Definition of a Variable Employee
  • Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
  • Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
