This is a seasonal full-time position located in Salem.

What will you do?  

You will assist in maintaining the Department’s Fire Cache operation in Salem and assist in the setup and maintenance of the Department’s field kitchens at project size incidents, usually forest fires. Your duties will include cleaning, refurbishing, and repairing Fire Cache equipment, in addition to keeping legible and accurate records. You will be responsible for maintaining predetermined inventory levels of firefighting equipment and field kitchen supplies within Fire Cache and the Fire Cache systems (fire cache vans, mobile kitchens, timekeeping and communications trailers, etc.)

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Candidates whose demonstrate skills, abilities and/or experience in the following:

  • One year of stocking, storeroom or warehouse experience which included purchasing a variety of supplies, equipment or materials and shipping and receiving materials and equipment.

  • Required to have forklift driving certification or obtain within 20 days or hire.

  • Have basic construction knowledge with skill at using basic tools as well as using mechanics and carpentry tools.

  • Have basic knowledge and ability to perform maintenance on restaurant cooking equipment such as convection ovens, gas ranges and grills, tilt skillets, warming ovens and warming tables.

  • Experience performing maintenance on motors including 2 and 4 stroke motors.

  • Experience at pulling trailers.

  • Ability to work with a personal computer with rudimentary knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.

  • Receive, maintain and inventory supplies and equipment.

  • Keep complete and accurate inventory and stores records.

  • Use of mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Communicate orally with a variety of people answering questions and gathering and exchanging information.

  • Ability to follows directions.

  • Organize work efficiently.

  • Exercise independent judgment in making appropriate decisions concerning work methods.

  • Apply specific, defined rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to work performed.

  • Skill in operating a calculator.

  • Help maintain security for the safe storage of store supplies.

  • Follow established procedures for storage and shipping of stores.

  • Move heavy boxes of supplies.

  • Ability to be on call (forestry non-paid) during fire season, carry a cell phone and respond to ODF Fire Cache in Salem within one hour.

  • Ability to work or drive on weekends, holidays, nights and to work long shifts.

  • Ability to be away from Salem for an extended period of time at an incident base located anywhere throughout the state or cooperating states

Working Conditions:

Normal daily operations are a warehouse, fabrication and equipment repair facility which may include minor vehicle maintenance.  Safe operation of all equipment and procedures are required.  The use of personal protective equipment is required and will be provided. This position is subject to the department’s Standard assignment policy, In part the policy states: A department employee is to be prepared when assigned to an incident to work 14 consecutive days, if needed. Department employees who complete a standard assignment shall receive incident management rest. In addition, if a department employee is on an incident(s) away from their official work station for 21 consecutive days or more they shall receive rest and recovery time.  The full policy can be seen @ ORS 477.005, ORS 240.551, DAS HR Policy 60.000.10.

This position is required to be on call 24/7 and carry a state cell phone.   Various shifts, long hours with short notice, weekends, holidays, and nights may be required. Could drive at all hours during emergencies including weekends, holidays, and nights, obeying all traffic laws.  May be required to drive on unimproved forest roads, in rough terrain, and required to drive forward and reverse in very tight places.
