Positions with permanent duty stations in King County receive an additional 5% added to their monthly base salary. The salary listed on this announcement reflects an additional 5%.

This job is all about protecting public resources on forest land. Join the South Puget Region of DNR as a Forest Practices Field Forester. The South Puget Sound Region is looking to fill a Forest Practices position in the Wilkeson Unit. The work area is from the Green River to the Puyallup River off to the East and Puget Sound to the West. You would work primarily in King and Pierce Counties.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
Responsible for evaluating harvest proposals, stream crossings and protecting Washington’s public resources. This is accomplished by possessing a working knowledge of the Washington State Forest Practice Rules and evaluating and approving/disapproving proposed Forest Practice Applications. Facilitating Interdisciplinary Teams of natural resource professionals when evaluating proposals.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • An Associate’s Degree in forestry or a related field; and four years of professional forestry experience.
  • Experience with GPS technology and GIS mapping products.
  • Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Conditions of Employment:
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Requires large majority (70%) of field work performed in isolated, unimproved natural areas. Must be able to traverse steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Requires large majority (60%) of time in the field traveling alone between forest practice sites. Some overnight stays may be required. Eligible for per diem and lodging costs when in travel status, except when provided by the agency.
  • Employees of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. This position is based in an office/fieldwork and requires in-person attendance/interactions with no option for full-time telework. Desired Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree involving major study Forestry, or related natural science and four years of paraprofessional experience in regulatory programs involving forestry.
