Description
The Sitka Sound Science Center is searching for Fishery Technicians for a summer fishery field project. This work involves daily sampling of chum salmon in several streams in Southeast Alaska. Team members will conduct remote stream work under a variety of conditions including rain, heat, bugs, bears, and more. Crew members will sample adult chum salmon for otoliths, tissue samples, and scales.
Crew members will spend time outdoors and in remote areas under challenging conditions. This includes working in rain, with bears and bugs, and limited time off. Shared housing, food stipend, and transportation during the project is provided.

Fishery Technician Description
As part of a survey team, technicians will tag live salmon, conduct population counts, collect genetic and life history samples, and more. Successful candidates will enjoy working in remote streams, be able to carry 30lb packs, and hike uneven terrain. A willingness to learn and work well with others is a must.
A variety of educational backgrounds are welcome to apply, preference is given to backgrounds in biology (or a related field) or local knowledge of Southeast Alaska. This project relies on collaboration, teamwork, and open communication. Period of employment is approximately July 10th – September 1st, 2023.
