Duties

Our European Green Crab (EGC) Biologist,

  • Conducts monitoring and assessments for European Green Crab (EGC) under the supervision of the lead biologist.
  • Trains staff to properly conduct European Green Crab (EGC) monitoring using established protocols.
  • Supervises Scientific Technician 2’s in European Green Crab (EGC) assessments throughout marine waters of Washington State.
  • Obtains permission to work on private and public property.
  • Coordinates with other entities (i.e. Washington Sea Grant, Northwest Straits Commission, Lummi Nation, etc.), while conducting European Green Crab (EGC) work.
  • Summarizes data, drafts summaries, prepares reports or report segments.
  • Assists in the review and/or development of mitigation plans.
  • Reviews environmental documents, or portions of the documents, from local governments, state, and federal agencies, and private individuals or organizations.
  • Makes initial determination and/or recommends conditions of permits.
  • Works with lead biologist to determine techniques and procedures, and/or performs field investigations or research projects, and assists in preparing management/research reports or proposals based on those activities.
  • Conducts quality control and quality assurance on all data collected.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Work is mostly conducted in the field and at times in the office.
    • Field work is performed during the day/night, outdoors, alone or with a team, in remote locations, and during all weather conditions.
    • Field work is physically demanding and includes hiking up to 10 miles per day, carrying a 75 lb. backpack of equipment throughout Washington’s vast marine environments.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically – Monday – Thursday – 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
    • Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules – may be required to respond on short notice to rapid response AIS emergencies.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Frequent statewide travel and overnight stays up to five days at a time.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Desktops, laptops, smart phones, electronic tablets, electronic software forms, Personal Flotation Devise (PFDs), and field gear (i.e. hip boots, xtratuffs, raingear).
    • Complex mobile water quality laboratory, eDNA, and non-electronic biological and environmental sampling devices.
    • Must safely transport and operate large equipment which includes a 25-foot cargo trailer, watercraft, flatbed trailer, winches, motor vehicles, and complex hot water trailered pressure washers.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interacts with the public on a regular basis conducting outreach and educational events, presentations, and monitoring – occasionally confronted with citizens that are non-compliant.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or a related field.

OR

  • Professional equivalent experience may substitute, year for year, for the education requirement – this experience must be in aquatic invasive species, fish, wildlife, or natural resource management.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Masters Degree, or a higher level degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a natural resources-related field.
  • One (1) year of experience in the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) field.
  • One (1) year of experience managing and monitoring European green crab populations.
  • Ability to ID invasive and native crab species.
  • Familiar with aquatic invasive species management principles and procedures.
  • Familiar with and able to develop, implement, and manage statewide biological studies and management actions.

Experience with:

  • Preparing comprehensive written reports.
  • Database construction, management, and routine analysis functions.
  • Managing a heavy workload.
