Salary- $3,616.00 – $4,738.00 Monthly
Our Fish Hatchery Specialist 3,
- Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve fish culture practices with crew and supervisor.
- Projects and monitors fish growth and feed requirements.
- Monitors fish health and behavior.
- Actively seeks to learn new fish culture practices.
- Calculates and administers chemical treatments as needed for fish health.
- Reports fish culture activities in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
- Monitors egg and fish production.
- Acts as a supervisor coordinating workers during complicated adult spawning and surplus activities.
- Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples, and fish plants/releases.
- Leads crew in feeding, cleaning, ponding, transferring, planting, and releasing fish.
- Represents the agency professionally during visitor tours, and public forums, affectively communicating potentially sensitive policy issues.
- Ensures that working components of the fish hatchery are kept in good condition (pumps, motors, vehicles, alarms, generators, and flashlights).
- Leads others at the facility in collecting, compiling, and reporting all pertinent data required by the program, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Work is performed outside in all weather conditions whether it is raining, snowing, sunny, dark, cold, or hot – at times will be required to repetitively lift or move at least 50 lbs.
- Schedule:
- Typically, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday.
- The work hours can vary greatly for this position at different times of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.
- Stand-by may be required for this position.
- Travel Requirements:
- Travel may be required for short periods of time to accomplish agency goals and required training, or to attend meetings.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Power and hand tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments.
- Small and large fish transport trucks, passenger vehicles, adult fish pumps, adult fish counters, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine powered equipment, computers, and software.
- Customer Interactions:
- Communicating effectively with public and volunteers is essential – will be required to work with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis who visit the hatchery to answer questions and give tours.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.
OR
- An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field AND Two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
OR
- Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND Two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field.
Please Note: Four years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.
Certifications/Licenses:
- A valid driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two- or four-year degree in Fisheries or closely associated field.
