Basic Function
-
*NOTE: This is a temporary, part-time position with no benefits for a six-month period. Hours may vary, 20-30 hours/week, depending on program needs. Must be available for weekend and evening work.*
Working under the guidance of the Public Education and Outreach team in the Public Works Department – Environmental Services Division, this position will support outreach efforts and assist in related field inspections. -
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Interact with multi-family and single-family residents, as well as property managers for businesses and apartments, educating them about proper recycling activities.
- Inspect and monitor trash enclosures and recycling containers, recording data, and provide ongoing follow-up outreach to multi-family residents and school-aged children, multi-family property managers and maintenance staff, and staff at various businesses.
- Provide support for setting up, staffing, and then taking down events, performing various event-related elements including: planning, promotion, operating, and then evaluating events.
- Assist with coordination of communication, timeline, and tracking for grant-related projects.
- Create, organize, and distribute outreach materials for Environmental Services and public outreach events, focusing on water quality, pollution prevention, recycling, and composting.
- Help with outreach at schools, including visiting schools to help maintain aquariums, and support other outreach efforts.
- Help maintain water quality testing equipment and manage equipment checkouts with volunteers.
- Operate desktop computers, copiers and printers, maintain accurate and orderly files, and record data accurately, and save digital information in specified subdirectories.
- Help optimize the City’s internal waste reduction and recycling efforts at various facilities. Support the City’s internal recycling and compostables programs.

Education and Experience

- Must have High School Diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience in general community outreach (community events, promotional materials, social media) is preferred but not necessary.
- Bilingual fluency is desirable
- Must have valid WA Driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Must be able to pass a national criminal background check.
