Picture yourself overseeing, facilitating, and ensuring compliance with environmental elements of project implementation including permit requirements, species evaluations, and Best Management Practices (BMP) usage.
These are opportunities to prepare and submit permit application packages/permit documents and secure final permits in a timely manner.

We are recruiting to hire at the Environmental Planner 2 or 3 level, and we will train a 2-level hire, up to the Environmental Planner 3 level.
Depending on which level you are hired at, your salary will be as follows:
Environmental Planner 2 – $4188.00 – $5494.00
Environmental Planner 3 – $4974.00 – $6534.00
- Duties
-
Depending on qualifications, expectations of the position’s duties, peer review status, and level of supervisor oversight may vary.
Our Environmental Permit Specialist (EP3) Goal Class,
- Determines permit requirements for CAMP projects and seeks peer review.
- Reviews projects for environmental and Endangered Species Act impacts.
- Provides project manager with options to meet environmental requirements.
- Writes Biological Assessments and Evaluations, Habitat Management Plans, Wetland reviews, and other biological documents required for permitting and seeks peer review.
- Coordinates with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies to determine permitting requirements.
- Communicates project needs to regulators as well as regulatory requirements to project managers.
- Coordinates with project managers, reviews project designs, determines/designs mitigation needs.
- Reviews research, contacts technical experts, performs site visits, analyzes data, and writes reports.
- Maintains knowledge of current environmental regulations and shoreline plans statewide.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Duties are performed in an office setting and in the field.
- Teleworking/remote work options may currently be available for office work – subject to supervisory approval.
- Fieldwork requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, on active construction sites, at hatcheries and wildlife areas.
- Must be willing to walk for extended periods on uneven/slippery terrains, in the mud, and on steep slopes.
- Climbing ladders, working at elevated locations, working on boats and in the water.
- Schedule:
- Typically, Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
- A flexible work schedule will be considered – subject to supervisory approval.
- Travel Requirements:
- Travel will be required throughout the state to attend trainings, meetings, and conferences.
- Travel for fieldwork will also be required; agency vehicles are provided and per diem is earned.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Computer hardware and software, cell phone, digital camera, field sampling equipment including turbidity meter, pH meter, conductivity meter, GPS unit, electrofisher, and fish removal equipment.
- Customer Interactions:
- Customer service is integral to department success.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
This Environmental Planner 3 (In-Training) series provides mentoring and career development opportunities. Candidates will be hired as an Environmental Planner 2 or 3, dependent on skills and experience. Candidates hired at the 2 level must successfully complete a two year in-training plan.
To qualify at the Environmental Planner 2 Level:
- An Associate’s degree with an emphasis/specialty in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.
AND
- Three (3) years of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, habitat management or habitat research, natural resource planning, or equivalent field.
OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.
AND
- One (1) year of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, habitat management or habitat research, natural resource planning, or equivalent field.
To qualify at the Environmental Planner 3 Level (Goal Class):
- An Associate’s degree with an emphasis/specialty in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.
AND
- Four (4) years of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, habitat management or habitat research, natural resource planning, or equivalent field.
OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.
AND
- Two (2) years of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, habitat management or habitat research, natural resource planning, or equivalent field.
AND
Professional, Academic and/or Voluntary Experience with:
- Obtaining federal, state, and local permits.
- Code, law, and regulation interpretation and compliance.
- Peer review of documents.
- Basic planning principles, techniques, current trends, environmental laws, methods, and objectives of natural resource planning.
- Restoration and mitigation techniques, wetland ecology, stream functions, land management and development, soil conservation and contamination.
- Fish and wildlife rules and regulations.
- Principles of harvest management and natural production.
- Lake and stream management.
- Principles and procedures of wildlife, fish, and habitat management.
- Policies and programs concerning all phases of state resource development.
- County planning regulations and shoreline master programs.
- Wetland delineations, stream hydraulics, lake, and stream management.
- Principles and procedures of wildlife, fish, and habitat management and biological research.
- Methods of biological data collection, interpretation, and presentation.
- Statistical and research theory and techniques.
- Experimental design, population measurement techniques and silviculture.
PLEASE NOTE, FOR EITHER OF THE ABOVE LEVELS:
Professional, Academic, and/or Voluntary Experience With:
- Field working techniques and safety.
- Written and oral communication proficiency.
- Technical writing.
- Research review.
AND
- Professional experience in fish management/research, wildlife management/research, habitat management/research, natural resource planning, or equivalent field may substitute, year for year, for the required education.
- A Master’s degree in fish management/research, wildlife management/research, habitat management/research, natural resource planning, or equivalent field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
- A PhD. in fish management/research, wildlife management/research, habitat management/research, natural resource planning, or equivalent field may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Driver’s License.
