Summary
-
This position includes a wide range of activities in the Environmental Health Division dealing primarily with disposal of sewage and siting of onsite sewage disposal systems. The employee in this position will conduct inspections and evaluate code compliance of proposed, active or damaged on-site septic systems, drain fields, and disposal sites. Residential education and outreach training on Environmental Health issues will be conducted as assigned. Employee may also support other Environmental Health programs as assigned.
Position is located on Whidbey Island but will perform work on both Whidbey and Camano Island.
This position may be hired at Level 1, 2, or 3, dependent upon qualifications:Hourly Pay:
EHS I: $ 28.14
EHS II: $ 30.70
EHS III: $ 33.25 -
Job Duties

Assist in coordination of the on-site operation and maintenance program.
-
Respond to a variety of requests for technical information.
-
Evaluate plans and approve/deny permits for construction of residential, commercial, and larger onsite sewage disposal systems with respect to provisions of state and local regulations; deal directly with design engineers, installers, general contractors, private individuals, and other public agencies; performs soil evaluations, records and prepares findings, and responds as appropriate.

Inspect the construction of onsite sewage disposal system installations and repairs, approving them for use in compliance with regulations.

Monitor multiple Environmental Health programs throughout the County, to ensure compliance with law and provide other support as needed/requested.

Prepare, implement, and monitor a variety of work plans.

Research and verify correct procedures are followed within Environmental Health programs to ensure compliance with codes and law.

Evaluate Environmental Health Programs; organize and conduct educational training in task areas for interested parties; disseminate information and coordinate projects with related agencies and the community.

Gather and input a wide range of Environmental Health data; perform special studies as needed.

Experience or skill with conflict management and/or resolution.

Education, Experience & Certifications
-

Washington State Department of Licensing On-Site Inspector Certificate of Competency or obtain certification within 24 months from date of hire.
-
Registered Sanitarian (R.S.) is desirable.

Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and to obtain certificates necessary for functional skills performance, maintenance, and improvement.

Valid Washington State Driver’s License.

Must be able to pass a background check with WA State Patrol after hire date.
EHS-II: At least 2 years of applicable experience or a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
EHS-III: At least 5 years of applicable experience or a master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
