COVID-19 Guidelines: Staff are asked to plan and navigate their in-person and remote work time based on personal and program needs. Many duties require in-person work, while some duties may be performed at home as appropriate. Masks are required inside the facility and while working with other staff, volunteers, students and visitors. Position Summary:

The Nisqually Reach Nature Center (NRNC) is looking for an enthusiastic experienced person
interested in managing our estuarine environmental science education program. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Education Director supports NRNC’s mission by providing youth and adults with high-quality educational programming related to the Nisqually Estuary. The Education Director ensures students gain access, exposure, and understanding of the Nisqually Estuary by using inquiry-based science activities on the beach. This position directs and manages NRNC’s summer camps, which aim to provide youth with a lasting positive connection to the Nisqually Estuary. This position creates new programs and curriculum for summer camps and field trips. New programs revolve around current issues concerning South Puget Sound, the Nisqually Watershed, and local flora and fauna.

  • Essential Duties:
    Manage and direct NRNC environmental science education programs (e.g. field trips and summer camps)
  •  Lead and create educational programs and hands-on curriculum that supports NRNC’s mission and is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards
  •  Partner with organizations to provide high quality education opportunities to underserved student
    populations
  • Recruit, train, and supervise education program volunteers and other education staff
  •  Coordinate and lead environmental education trips
  •  Coordinate and attend community outreach events
  • Build and maintain partnerships with organizations to increase educational opportunities
  •  Oversee creation of outreach materials and methods to advertise education programs
  •  Attend monthly board meetings to report on education programs

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in education, biology, ecology, environmental science, natural science, aquatic
    science, fisheries, or closely related field and 1 year of experience in education, environmental education, marine sciences, natural sciences, or a closely allied field
  • Has knowledge of environmental education, marine science biological systems, tidal charts, watershed & estuarine ecosystems, data management, and Puget Sound aquatic species
  •  Demonstrated public speaking and/or teaching experience
  •  Ability to obtain the Wilderness First Responder certificate
  •  Knowledge in outdoor skills and overnight camping with students
  •  Ability to attend conferences, meetings, or other events that require travel
  •  Strong project management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  •  Analytical problem-solving ability
  •  Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform within deadlines
  •  Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills
  •  Able to work with minimal supervision while understanding the necessity for communicating and
    coordinating work efforts with others
  •  Must be able to develop a work plan and perform in a team environment
  •  Computer proficiency: word processing, spreadsheets, Internet research, and databases
  •  Performs work with utmost honesty and integrity
  •  Criminal background check is required
  •  Understands and appreciates the importance of extraordinary customer service
